It's the truth! My gas mileage always goes up when I go out of state for some reason. Haven't taken the bike out of state yet, but I'd be interested to see what kind of mileage I get out of it with gas that doesn't suck the gas lines almost closed.

I'm sure this crap doesn't help the rest of the fuel system, and it's why I'm beating my heat against a wall trying to get fuel out of the injectors on my Camaro after sitting. (that or the stupid rats, but all the wiring seems to be fine, so I think the injectors are clogged, and I don't have almost $200 to replace them right now).

        Getting ready

It looks like I'll be leaving on Fri. 13 May and going to take I 70 instead of I 40 at least to St. Louis with the first stop in Grand Junction, CO to visit friends. I want to visit The Whiz in N. Carolina and hopefully do at least part of the XS East Rally. I still haven't found anyone else going to that rally from around here. I'll probably be the one who travelled the farthest for the rally. After that I'm going to PA to visit family, NY to visit friends, IL to visit friends and return to Cantaffordya. I put a new rear tire on yesterday hoping it will last to NY where I have arranged for a new one in Ithica for the return trip.

                    Weather

Well, I didn't get far. High mountain passes, freezing rain, black ice and snow turned me around in the Utah mountains. Would have taken the southern route, but when I got home I found the wife's sniffles she had when I left had turned into something more sinister, so I cancelled the trip altogether. It looks like it was a good idea as the weather turned really bad on the southern route as well.

I'm not known for riding behind semi's much. Mostly going about 40 MPH more than they are allowed or capable of. LOL I had a friend bet me I would get more than one ticket on my trip. I didn't take the bet.

Diver this is entirely TRUE...I get better gas mileage out of my bike in NY about 42mpg average out there but its a higher octane fuel as well...93 as apposed to the 91 here in CA...the only time i've done better was when i got 45mpg on my ride out to coast and back...it was the chevron gas station...dont know if u fill there, but i recommend it...also if you get gas from a universal pump, ie. a pump that is a one pump all fuel ratings you will actually have a lower lvl octane fuel than 91 due to the 85 octane that is in the hose still from the guy who fueled his pickup before you fueled your bike...always guess if u use an universal pump that you are going to end up with a 1/2 to 1 gal of the lowest octane fuel...but if u dont use the universal yeh its still from the fact that fuel out here in CA SUX!

Um, you do know that the higher the octane the lower the amount of energy your engine will get out of it unless you engine MUST use the higher octane (because if high enough compression that is requires the higher octane) because it take longer to burn so if the engine isn't set for it because it requires it it doesn't completely burn it before the power stroke completes. Gas mileage goes down with the higher octane fuels. I get my be mileage with regular, mid grade does almost as well, but mileage drops significantly with premium, and frankly it doesn't like it. I've had other vehicles that this hasn't been true of, but all of those had computer controlled ignition with knock sensors that allowed timing to auto advance to take advantage of the fuel octane level automatically, but these older engines cannot do that, so you either have to manually set them up for it, which means you MUST use it, or you waste your money, and the higher octane fuel runs hotter, not a good thing on air cooled engines.

I've never seen a bike that suggests you use a lower octane fuel than 90...and i can possitively say that the octane rating is not relative to the energy content of the fuel, an octane ratings is better described as anti-knock rating since that is the pupose of it anyway...i have never had a single engine not get better fuel mileage with a higher octane rating...my truck, rated for 85 octane - keeping in mind that it is an anti-knock rating - is rated for 85 because below that the knock that is caused by the fuel being ran in my truck will cause broken connecting rods, melted pistons as well as melted or broken valves, if i run a higher rating i get more power and higher fuel mileage the same goes for my 2 motorcycles as well as my van and my two 4 wheelers... knowing this, if you run a higher octane fuel you reduce the knock in the engine which will increase its efficiency, not to say that at some point its not going to help any more or that it wont hurt the fuel mileage that you get, but based on the fact that the octane is based on its Anti-knock properties we could only conclude that the higher octane can only be better for your engine...especially if it is older since the higher the octane the longer the engine life... lets also go back to this the higher octane burns hotter...u even said this yourself, which i do agree with, the higher the octane the slower it is to combust...and with that statement you also prove yourself to be wrong as we all know the faster something is to ignite the hotter it will get as it is being burned...take for instance dry hay...if u take the same mass amount of dry hay as you do a stack of paper which one ignites faster? the hay will, also which one burns hotter? the hay does...with these two principles we also can realize that in order to get the hay to burn for as long as the stack of paper does we actually need to add more hay because of it burning off faster...so knowing that the quicker fuel combusts the hotter the fuel will burn and in order to sustain itself the more fuel you will need, we can only deduce that the lower octane will make your engine not only consume more fuel due to it burning off faster, but also make your engine run hotter...i do thank you for your input though... at least you read my posts...LOL but if you want you can just ignore this post, i was just ranting anyway...i think we all just need to get that fuel tamper and we'll be all good...oh and as far as your camaro goes try using Lucas fuel injector cleaner and after that run Lucas fuel stabilizer for a few hundred miles, It worked wonders on my camaro...and i was having the same issue...if u spray starter fluid in your intake and its starts then dies, chances are you need a new fuel filter, idk what year yours is but i ended up having a huge rust issue in my tank after sitting for a little while...
