Parts Bike with title in San Antonio

That title would make life easier for anybody using the engine in a state that requires both VIN's. In some cases you have to be able to document where the engine that doesn't match the frame came from and that it's legit. Then again for just the engine often only a receipt showing purchase is needed.Cy

Not sure
Fred, I'm not sure of the laws pertaining to titling motorcycles. I know he doesn't mention a frame though.Meteor3178

Exactly what I was thinking Fred. Every state I know anything of requires the titel to match the frame information. Some folks here have advised that their local authorities require the engine to match as well, but if you do not have the frame to match the title you would be hosed.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

My undersanding, in the 4 states that I have lived in (Wisconsin, Colorado, Arizona, Oregon) that the title must match the frame, not the engine. In fact, it is common for brand-new bikes to have engine and frame numbers off by a couple digits.
When I bought my XJ from a guy in Maine, the title number and frame number did not match, as one pair had been transposed on the title. I had to take a photo of the frame number and sent it to Maine so they could send me a corected bill-of-sale. (Maine does not title motorcycles over 5(?) year old. You get a bill-of-sale instead of a title.) Never was asked about the engine number, or if it matched. Only interest was in the frame number. I had no problems getting a title in Wisconsin from the bill-of-sale issued from Maine. Neither state ever asked about the engine number.Jerry Fields

Yes Jerry, one of those state-by-state things. I believe the better portion of the US states do NOT require the engine number. I know for a fact that Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana do not. But then, just like California decided to go against the grain on a few "delicate" issues, so do others on this issue of engines and frames matching it seems. But, i am willing to bet no matter what state you go to, if the Frame does not match the title your screwed. Regardless of whether the engine matches or not.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

PS, since many other states don't require this, California takes whatever the other state does, and then puts the engine number on the Ca title.Cy
