  • Bad evening...

SWMBO went for a short walk last night around 5 PM and just a few minutes later she called and was crying and something about falling down. So I rushed to where she was and she had a 1" gash over her right eye and a bump on her forehead. Off to the ER. First one had almost no business and no one at the window, but I could see some guy cutting a pumpkin in a side room. I tapped on the window until a girl came to it and I asked if anyone was doing triage and if they were excepting patients. She told me in a nasty way there was others ahead of me. I told her I saw the pumpking ahead of us and we left.

Next ER was quick to get us filling out paperwork and then the waiting began. Much busier than the other place, but names were being called and patients began to go inside. 2 hours 30 minutes later we were called and inside we waited another 45 mins before anyone came by to see us. He said he was gonna send her for a cat scan and left. We were ushered out to the waiting room again. Meanwhile she decided not to have the cat scan done because of the exposure by that kind of thing and when they finally came to get her for the scan she said she didn't want one so, wait more. About an hour later she was called back to the ER area and about 30 mins later the Dr. came by again and said he was gonna get another Dr. to sew her up. And he asked her what I hit here with while looking sideways at me. He asked me to go to the waiting room so he could talk with her and she said "he didn't hit me, I fell" and he said "OK, but I still want to talk to you about it". She told him to buzz off. He got a little huffy and left. Well, you know what that did to the wait time. Just a little more than an hour the other Dr. came by to put in the stitches.

About an hour later, came the tetnus shot and we could leave. Got home around 11 PM really expecting to have the cops come visit us.

had a similar evening last year

My wife's rottweiler mix decided it wanted to get a closer look at a jogger and yanked her off her feet, landing her head on the curb. I got the same feeling that everyone was thinking, "Yeah sure, the dog did it"
I wouldn't mind that part of the emergency room visit as sadly there is a real need to check on that, but why not get the wound fixed first and then start asking those questions. You make it sound the like that one doc wanted to chit chat and then go find the doc to put in the sutures.
I have a bike and I am not afraid to use it

Emergency rooms suck! What's worse is the number of people who go to the ER with non-emergencies because they don't have insurance or a regular doctor. They are the ones who cause the unnecessary waits. There is no reason why someone who is bleeding should have to wait more than 5 minutes to begin triage!

When my son was right around a year old, he fell down 1/2 a flight of stairs (after being pushed by a 2 y/o) at a friend's house. He ended up getting a spiral fracture from his knee to his ankle out of the deal. Of course, the folks at the ER separated his mom and I to ask us about how the injury happened to be sure one of us hadn't abused him... It was rather disconcerting, but at the same time, I can see how they need to look out for that kind of thing.

Thankfully around this part of the country anyway, we have urgent care facilities. They are never as crowded as the ER, and much more personalized care. Don't get me wrong it is still treat 'em and street 'em medicine. But, less BS than in the ER anyway. And a much lower co-pay on my insurance.

You get in real quick if you are like me. I just tell them i think i am having another heart attack. They seem to think that is important. That is the only reason i go in anyway. Last time it took less than 5 minutes, and no paperwork. When they looked for my previous paper work, they darn near yanked me into the wheel chair. I am glad your wife put the docs in their place though. Good for her.

Don't feel too bad. Around here they will triage you right away but after that, if your not on your death bed you can wait up to 12 hours to be seen by a doctor.

Yep, I was given initial triage for blurry vision within 10 minutes of my arrival at the ER last year. Then I sat in the treatment room for 6 hours before someone finally realized they had not even called the on-call eye guy, and this was for retinal tear. But when I had chest pains from what turned out to be heartburn, I was in, and before I knew what was happening I was in a room on the CCU. 3 days of tests and such, and not being able to eat pretty much all day each day, to determine I had heartburn.

I did have pretty quick turn around when I had a kidney stone a month or so ago. I walked in and immediately was taken into the "admissions" area where the guy took down my info. Then they took me back to the treatment area before they even got my insurance card and such. They gave me some pain meds, took me back for a CT scan and had me back in the room (yes, a real room, not just curtains ) where I slept for an hour or so while they processed the scan and some lady took my insurance info and such. I was in treated and out in about 3 hours total. Got out just in time to go to work.

Planedick, Garth and I had a blast riding Ortega Highway with you this afternoon, thank you! Must do that again!

I didn't even know your SWMBO had been hurt when Garth called yesterday to try to set up the ride for today but, as usual, she looks great and it was good to see her again. Okay, the stitches are a little grim but there's no way you did anything wrong except take her to the wrong hospital first. Tell the those slow, foul-minded doctors and staff at the second hospital that dragged dragged their feet whilst jumping to conclusions to go pound sand!
