  • Valve clearences

While I had the head off Pathfinder I was doing the valve adjustment thing. The closest manual was the Clymers so I opened it to check specifications. I thought it was for sure wrong because it said the intake side was to be 0.0004 - 0.0016 in or (0.0010 - 0.022 mm) and exhaust was 0.0010 - 0.022 in or (0.025 - 0.055 mm)

Went for the Haynes and it said intake was 0.006 - 0.008 in or (0.16 - 0.20 mm) and exhaust was 0.008 - 0.010 in or (0.21 - 0.25 mm) I don't know where Clymers got those nuimbers, but they're obviously wrong....

Yup, my Clymer's says the same thing as yours, planedick. It shows shows an extra zero in the specs on page 56. However, it does show the right amounts in the pad selection procedure on page 46.

I guess mine is the same on that page, BUT turn back to page 44, there is where its going through the procedure and it has the other numbers.

Which is even more interesting since the specs are not the same for all 4 years, but are different between the early and late style head.

                Proceedure

Well, I don't need to follow the proceedure 'cause I've done it before and I really did know the correct clearences, but I just thought I would check to be sure as I really like to do it right the first time. If you compare the two other references you give on pages 44 and 46 you will see that they are different from each other as well.

Yeah I guess I remember looking at the numbers on page 46 and thinking something was weird. But there is that not there that says the numbers are for example purposes only so I ignored any numbers on pare 46.

I wonder why there isnt a late part in the back of the clymer manual that says the clearances for the later model systems.

In my Clymers manual, there is chapter 12 which gives all the updated info for the 80-81 model years.

On mine at least it is in there. You have ot find the section on valve adjustment. Chapter 12 is not subdivided into the 11 other sections per say. More than one section may even be on the same page. But if you find the valve clearnace check procedure part, it clarifies the smaller inlet valve clearance on the later models.
