Saw a lot of Harleys and their riders this summer broken down on the side of the road. Last Sunday while I was out riding I saw one being pulled up onto a flatbed, with the riders on the side of the road sadly watching it be winched up; an unfortunate early end to what could have been a pleasurable riding weekend. Seems like most of the issues tend to be electrical in nature. While I passed by, I had the thought that it might be a good idea to sign up with AAA with Motorcycle roadside assistance, even though I've never had to stop by the side of the road for any extended length of time. Then another question occured to me: does HOG membership offer roadside assistance? I'm thinking they probably should.

A friend of mine relayed to me his newish HD was hit from behind in August. He basically dropped the bike form under him and it rolled into a car next to him.
So far, he is about 10 down in line to get parts and repairs made to the bike so he can ride again. In two months time, I could buy a decent XS, take it down to frame and put it back together in tip top shape and been riding for a week or two!! How much and how rare can parts be for a 2 year old machine!!???Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

to sign up with a roadside assistance program and never need to call them is the very best insurance you can get.
But even if the HOG does offer such a program I doubt they'd come and fix your Yamaha.Fred Hill, S'toon

See, I have a problem with budgeting for things that I have to pay once or twice a year, so I would rather pay a bit more to be able to pay it monthly, and to do that I had to pretty much up my insurance. As it is, I may have to find a way to put it even higher, as this year they lowered my ins cost significantly, and it is now below the normal level at which they will do monthly, but at least for now they are still doing it that way.
For about $15 a month I have full coverage, really good PL and PD, medical payments that will cover my "out of pocket" medical expenses (like co-pays) and roadside assistance.Cy

HOG members here have a nationwide roadside assist program, but they contract the actual assist part to the AA (Automobile Association).
They also have their own insurance scheme, underwritten by NAC, a division of IAG Insurance.
NAC is a specialist company that insures modified and high performance vehicles, and young drivers. They're rediculously expensive but for some it's the only way.1980 SG. (Sold - waiting on replacement)

I use to carry AAA and be very content my backside was covered. Then one day the Cutlass had an issue and I needed it towed home. Well, when I told them it needed to be a flat bed they said I had to pay the extra for a flat bed. Then the guy shows up and tells me, AAA will not cover it period. According to AAA if you as much as put non-stock wheels on the car, they will not tow it...PERIOD..END OF STORY!!
So I told them to refund my membership and count me out.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

AAA in Northern California will NOT tow motorcycles! Southern Cal, and the REST OF THE COUNTRY WILL!!
I still use AAA for the car, but I've got the BMW covered for tow with the full coverage from a different carrier.....Ray Matteis

AAA RV plus
I use the RV plus and it gives you 100 miles of towing for a bike. I've had to use it twice for the 99 venture I used to have, once about 20 miles outside of sioux falls SD and once about 15 miles south of DC on I95. In SD the towing company came out with a trailer and the guy said he was HD approved so he can get HOG members heading out and coming back from Sturgis. South of DC it was a flat bed that came out. So pretty happy with the service. Now that I sold the Venture and just ride the XS I may just let the coverage lapse as I don't seem to be using it anymore.I have a bike and I am not afraid to use it

Best is AMA
Only $39 per year, magazine, free roadside assistance for entire family and all vehicles and they are the ones fighting in congress for the rights of MC riders. Thank them next time you get to use the car pool lane on your bike for instance....You can't stay young forever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life...

I have the Progressive Roadside Assistance, but so far, I haven't needed it. Hopefully, I never will.
My neighbor, the guy who totaled this HD while towing a trailer, just went and bought 2 new HD's! He bought the first one, but wants it in an uncommon color (orange), so he won't receive it till DECEMBER!! So he decided that he needed to buy a bike off the floor so he'd have something to ride until then... I don't know where he gets all his $$, and I'll just shake my head at that one, but to have to wait 2.5 months to get a bike??!! HD must have a shortage on manufacturing or something...1980 XS850SG - Sold

big bikes big bucks
Hey Cantonic: I know a quite a few guys with big harleys up here & they all paid cash & are basically loaded & the $30,000 plus is not a big deal. When they pay $80-$100 up here for a harley t-shirt & other misc. items with the decal on it. Hey man, they don't care about the cost its all about 'gettin the bike' & the goods that go with it - good marketing - & for the regular boys low payments for many, many years. - Dan'81 XS1100 LH - Midnight Special - been lookin' a long time for this one.
