Yeh, I felt the same way about the seat. I'll get it right at some point. Here is a pic of option 2. I rigged a 2 up seat, so I can take the wife for a ride. The Harley seat will be on it most of the time.

This bike started as a cafe racer ....two owners ago. His name was or is Andy Jones, no relation to Bob. He spent about $6,000 on mods. I got a three ring binder with the bike, with all the slips in it.
The carbs are Klein CR Special race carbs (says they are not for street use, oh no!) The coils are dyna high energy. The MSD was already in it so I couldn't tell you what he did to hook it up. It's got the 1200 kit, webb cams, ported heads, back cut gears, (all done by Fast by Ferracci) oil preasure guage, Standard style air forks, Kerker, fork brace, drilled rotors, steel lines. and alot more. It was stated to have 140 hp. I couldn't tell you for sure. I drove it far enough to check the trani and pull the highest wheely I ever pulled by mistake. It's been setting in my garage for 3 years looking for some love. When I sold my other bikes it was time!
The guy I got it from changed it to...ah I'm not sure what to call it. A sort of factoriysh standard with some of the worst blue paint I ever saw. All those parts were sold on ebay along with a parts bike that came with it a week after I got it home.

I've been playing around with ideas. to cafe or not to cafe? I will have to put a front fender on it for inspection but after that it can come off. I had Ole's classic bikes do the carbs,I lined a tank, put new fuel lines and filters on, rebuilt some petcocks, hacked some seats, bobbed the fender, shortened the rear signals, found a grab bar, painted the motor, replaced the starter switch and changed the oil and filter. I picked up a 140mph speedo, cat eye brake light and a 79 special idiot box. They will be on it soon.

It runs pretty well but needs a rear brake job, a front brake cleaning and new drive train oil. Then a torque check on all the fittings and polish. It will be done by spring maybe on the road by fall. If I can swing it some new raised white letter tires too.

I like it Garrett..seems to me whatever you have done works out really well. I also like the 2 up seat. 140HP? You should have it dyno'ed. Regardless it does look bad to the bone.

Understand that I didn't say it had 140hp, that is just what is in the paperwork. It did have alot of snot, I'm sure of that.
Oh yeh...even the swing arm is beefed up with an xrta bar, not that it would make it faster but he really went all out with the xtras.
It won't be long until we see for sure, either way I was getting a unreal bike or a pile of parts that would cost a fortune.

It would be great if you could look into that MSD hookup. From what I've read, an alternative iggy might be useful.

It's hard to see and even harder to get a pic of it. It's a u shaped bar welded in under the swing arm and drive shaft. Why? I don't know.

It must have such beastly power they thought it would rip the back wheel off. LOL.

What is the progress on this bike, and the eventual outcome??

It looks great, just wondering if you have done anymore to it? I like how you managed the two up with the bobbed fender. Did you cut it off under the seat when you stuck it under there?

I think you should try lowering the front a little, too, too minimize the peaky profile that these bikes are cursed with. I lowered the triples, headlight, and gauges on mine to minimize this look:

                    This

                    vs

                    Now

you do have to watch your front tire clearance with the headlight, though. It does hit if you get it too low! I think the lines of the bike move a lot better lowered that way. I still admire your seats, though!

Nice work, Garrett! Welcome to the dark side of low bars! Gotta love that handling!

Well.....I had to order some hard to get carb parts for the CR Specials, I ordered them Oct 15th and just got them the other day.....now I'm pretty busy until after Christmas. I did take the bike out for a ride and wasn't into the low bars...my hips cramped up every 100 yards. Maybe I could do it with the rearsets but I am missing a few parts that I think I may have sent to Ole with a bunch of other things. I'll get back to that later.
I've reworked both seats and have a third one now. My new side covers and logos are here and I'm told the tank will be done "this weekend"
Funny you should say welcome to the dark side. After the rework I think it will be more like the "white knight' I did lower the front end, and would have to say this one will look more like the Orange bobber than a cafe racer.
Ods are I will sell it and pay some bills then get another 78 or 80 11 standard. I liked the look of just moving the rear fender up under the seat and just letting the rest as is.
I did see a great xs 850 standard cafe and plan to make one like it at some point.
I have to think I will spend most of the winter looking for a new line of work and shutting down my father's business. The bills are more than we are bringing in and the cost of everything is more than we can make with people not spending anything. I may take a second shift job and try to have some sort of vintage bike backup business from 8 to 3. Seeing Ole start his shop and retire from his other job has got me thinking..................

                        Hi 'lover,
it's to stiffen the swingarm so it don't flex as much under extreme cornering.
Works great if it's done right and just adds to the unsprung weight if it ain't.

Man,sounds like you have a lot of things in the works, anyway, and not just bikes! I think the rearsets would help the low bar condition, but only for a short while. They are not the "comfort option", that is for sure. I will look forward to some pics of it if you get chance.

Good luck with your future career moves, I hope everthing works well for you with all the changes!

Great looking bikes guys! I prefer this to the bobber style that seems much more popular.

T99ford : Is your bike an '80? Love that tank. I was thinking of doing the same with my '82 but on the passenger seat instead of the tank. Great job!

Yeah, it's an 80. I was lucky enough to have the foresight that if I put a number on the tank, the first thing people would ask was what the number stood for At least I have a legitimate reason. The tank is just a standard tank fit onto my special. Better profile, IMO, and more fuel too. The paint is BMW black pearl and Kia Metallic, the numbers and stripes gold leaf, with a little pinstriping, all buried under several coats of wet clear. Overall I am pretty happy with it.

OK. after getting my float jet gaskets back in December and putting them in, I found that the #1 carb float still leaked. When I put the new gaskets on the jets I noticed that the #1 jet didn't snap in like the others....infact I had to force it in.......almost like it was out of round. so I ordered parts again, float jet, needle, and gasket this time. I finally got the parts 2-17-11! I got them in on Sunday and they didn't leak at all. It's about time! I got out for a ride and the 1200 really is pulling hard at red line. So much that I'm a little leery of opening my hand to pull the clutch for fear I will slide off the back!!! Oh yeah the new seat is dyna diamond....there isn't a hump on the back like the orange bobber.....it may have not been the best choice.
Monday morning came and we have a freakin foot of snow, on hold again.

I have the brakes torn off the $100 special...I'm having some trouble freeing the pistons from the calipers. The new forks and fork logo plate are here....they may both be ready for spring. I'll post some pics as soon as I get the new front end on.
