  • Akron City Hospital

That’s where I’m writing this from. I went to the Mid Ohio Vintage Bike days and hit a deer on rt. 76 Sunday morning about 9:30 A.M. I have 4 broken ribs, my shoulder bone and collar bone are broken and I have a pneumothorax.

    https://health.google.com/health/ref/Collapsed+lung

I spent 5 days in ICU and now I’m in the regular side of the hospital. They just pulled my chest tube… Man that hurt…
I was east bound doing about 70, the deer came from the west bound woods across traffic, across the median barrier into my lanes and almost the across the road
Someone in a car in front of me almost hit him (yes, him, a buck that would have looked good on anyone’s wall)
I had worked on the bike in preparation for the trip to Kentucky so I had new brake shoes and the calipers and mcs were cleaned. I was braking and down shifting when he decided to turn around and go back the way he came from. I figured at this point I’m going to get hurt and my three potential points of impact were guard rail, woods and deer. If he was the cause of this he was going to feel the pain too so I t-boned him.
I hit him and went down on my left side and rode the bike until it started to flip. I rolled and when I tried to get up, knew my collar bone was broken so I grabbed my left arm with my right and scampered off the road.
The guy I was riding with almost ran me over, the semi behind him almost ran me over but I made it off the road.
The medic squad took me to Akron City Hospital, there was a closer hospital but ACH is a level 1 trauma center. They told me if I didn’t have the helmet I would have been dead on the road…
I’ll post pictures later. I’m feeling pretty good (Percocet baby) and feeling VERY lucky. I have another bike, but the bastages ran over my wayfarers….

    Take care ride safe

First of all, I am VERY happy to see you sending this message personally!! Secondly...I will second the notion on the brain bucket!! It is the only reason I am here and able to type and write stuff this close to intelligent.

Wowww...do I feel your pain....no...literally!! Call it sympathy pains or just reliving the moment, but I know it all to well. And the pneumothorax part...well...eventually they do quit x-raying your lungs...really...I promise.

On the ribs, if they have not given you two secret weapons yet, here they are.... 1. Lidocain patches!! These are Gods gift to rib pain!! Take it from a guy who broke 9, 7 of those in front and back...they help ALOT. If you don't have them...GET THEM!! 2. When ever coughing, sneezing, or laughing, hold a pillow tight to your chest and squeeze it as hard as you can.

On the collar bone and shoulder, yep those suck to. Again, from experience, when the doc tells you start getting it moving....GET IT MOVING!! Regain all range of motion as soon as possible because it is a total witch with a capital B to regain later. There is no stretching a shoulder muscle, there is only how much it hurts to move it.

Good news is....it all heals up. And beleive it or not, the ribs will heal the quickest even though they hurt the worst!!

Anything I can do to help, let me know. Your not that far away from here, so do not hesitate to make the call for help!!
