I am a new owner of an 80 xs 11oo. I am in the eastern shore area of maryland. Looking for anyone in the area that has an xs to ride and swap stories with.
I bought this XS on e-bay and ended up doing almost complete restoration. Bad forks from the plane ride (full compression at 30000 feet did not sit well with the seals ) master cylinder rebuild new tires also full psi at altitude is quite damageing. I have only ridden several times but she is an angry pulling beast.

NH restoration

Hey I'm in Southern NH and I just picked up a 79'xsf, spent seven years sitting in the elements next to a trailer. Im starting a rebuild but looks in huge trouble, needs probably everything. The #4 piston is frozen at least and ive been trying to break it.
The exhaust is done but the header is fine, there are 28000 miles on it from the paperwork which is complete.
Any suggestions on how to go about restoration would be cool.

Have a house in OC and travel the Eastern Shore on a very regular basis. Live just the other side of the Chesapeake so the comute is a bear but will be down 1 july for a few days.

Hey there Larry/Spanky,

First off, if your's is an 80, then it's an SG, if an 81,then an SH. You can write down your serial number, and then click on the Specifications section in the left column, then Serial numbers and match yours up to verify the year...registrations have been wrong before!

Congrats on your new find. In the tech tips, you will find a thread about what to look for in a neglected XS11, which will tell you what you will want to restore/refurbish to get it into proper safe operational condition. There are lots of tech tips for many things, repairs, maintainance, modifications, etc..

Sorry, but I'm way down here in southeastern Va., there are several Xsives in the DC area. Good luck with the project.

I did a teardown and recondition on mine

start with a comfortable place to work
get the bike up in the air
on a table or a couple of sawhorses
mount it securely
000 odd steel wool works good on the chrome
and repaint everything else
best way is to take it all apart and clean-steel wool- repaint
buff, buff , buff

live on ebay, lots of hard to find things there
make friends with your local yamaha dealer ( parts counter person )
find an older guy, as the bike is older than the younger guys
and unless it is a crotch rocket they are not interested
above all take your time and enjoy it
have fun
