I'm sure that if one would sit back and reflect for a moment on what the original intent of GURU status meant, one would agree that this is a good thing.
Yeah, because before the HBT there never were Guru's that had gotten that status with fluff. And there are some that have achieved Guru status here that I would not trust to change my lightbulb based on the "advice" I have seen them give.

It just keeps getting more and more petty here every day.

Seriously though, not that I really care one way or the other, but it does beg the question that maybe Guru status should only be relevant to the XS/XJ forum and not the members lounge. At least that way anybody reaching Guru status should have reasonable enough knowledge to be able to live up to the title, and pass that knowledge on. Not withstanding those who already had sufficient knowledge prior to joining. Those people are usually pretty easy to identify and generally arent concerned about titles anyway. JAT

Locking the forum but still allowing access would have been far better (IMHO) as then the hyperbole and speculation about what is acceptable would have ended. Guru status??? “SNORT”, It takes WAY MORE than post numbers to make someone a GURU.

As for myself this site is great and as many have said you can't please all the people all the time. I have asked and gotten good answers from good people but I had also torn my bike totally down and had it running before I even knew this existed. Many people were totally lost without this site. So even if it had not helped me (which it defiantly has) it would still be a great site.

OBTW- not stepping on anyones toes but I have seen numerous instances of conflicting bike related oponions between "gurus". In addition to that I have also seen bad info (items directly in contradiction to my profession) from resident gurus.
          Couldn't have said it better John.......A BIG + 1

I've always just had a lot of fun here WHILE I was learning, and I still am........so far.......we'll see.

          FYI..............

A guru (Sanskrit: गुरु, Tamil: குரு)is one who is regarded as having great knowledge, wisdom and authority in a certain area, and who uses it to guide others (teacher). In Sanskrit gu means darkness & ru means light. As a principle for the development of consciousness it leads the creation from unreality to reality, from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge. In its purest form this principle manifests on earth as a divine incarnation (saint), a person with supreme knowledge about God and all creation.[1] Other forms of manifestation of this principle also include parents, school teachers [1], non-human objects (books) and even one's own intellectual discipline.[2]

In the religious sense the term is commonly used in Hinduism and Sikhism, as well as in other Indian religions and new religious movements. Finding a true guru is often held to be a prerequisite for attaining self-realization. Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh religion said: "Even if a thousand suns and moons rose, they would be unable to remove the darkness of ignorance within the heart. This can only be removed through the grace of the Guru." [3]"Guru" also refers in Sanskrit to Brihaspati, a divine figure in Hinduism. In Vedic astrology, guru or Brihaspati is believed to exert teaching influences.[clarification needed] Indeed, in many Indian languages such as Hindi, the occidental Thursday is called either Brihaspativaar or Guruvaar (vaar meaning day of the week).[citation needed]

In contemporary India, the word "guru" is widely used with the general meaning of "teacher". In Western usage, the meaning of guru has been extended to cover anyone who acquires followers, though not necessarily in an established school of philosophy or religion.[4] In a further Western extension, guru is used to refer to a person who has authority because of his or her perceived secular knowledge or skills, such as in business.

What Jessie's saying is that the vBulletin software does not support differentiating the post count between the Tech Forum and other forums, so the post counts increase no matter what or where you post!

But in general, for NEWBIES, it can give a person a modest sense of whether any advice that is delved out by a member can be considered proper and accurate based "PARTLY" on seeing the post count that the person providing the info has. There are always EXCEPTIONS to this as has already been pointed out in the previous posts, but just like the jetting "GUIDE", it's a guide, not a hard and fast rule!

                    Hi Prom,
great that you are back from wherever you have been this last while.
I am one of those who have never been inside an XS11 engine so I am not comfortable about being given the "Guru" designation.
I had to learn from this list that the engine ran backwards, even.
OTOH, I have been at the economy shade tree mechanic end of motorcycling for over half a century.
That has to count for something, eh?

No, Big John, it all makes perfect sense.

This will ensure that when a newbie contacts a guru they get corrext information. You know, like how silicone pieces can break off and mystically deny the laws of physics and pass through the oil pump screen, the close tolerances of the pump, the filter's micron substrate and rematerialize to plug up the oil galleys, locking up the engine and sen
ding the bike flailing into a chasm, because when the engine locks up, that clutch is worthless. Or, making sure that newbies understand that they will die if they run 40psi in their tires. You don't want that blood on your hands. Of course, there's always the stupid gurus that will tell you a battery that won't hold a load is either not fully charged or is defunct. Those guys deserve to die on the Million Dollar Highway (in jest of course) but since that would be a rather permanent punishment for thwarting someone's pride to the point they have to save face by rebuilding a solenoid (and keeping the new battery..... just because), they should just delete their opinions instead. Also, this will allow people, who claim to have limited mechanical ability, to sucker someone into fixing their bike for them, then, when they think "Hey! That was easy!", instead of paying it forward, they can charge people exteraneous fees to do the same job someone else has done for them for free, because after all, they are a GURU.

See? it all makes perfect sense

I agree locking the forum would have been a better solution. Obviously post count has no bearing on knowledge or ability. So, no Prom. I don't agree this is a good thing. Forcing people to throw their Bibles in the fire never is.
