  • I rode it and discovered that after the carb sync, the clutch slips pretty bad. Time to see if it just needs adjusting or if new springs are in order. More than likely the latter of the two options tho.

Also discovered that my speedometer howls like a wounded hound dog now. Must be on its last leg.

Just unscrew the cable, at the speedo, put a dab of grease (lithium, Lubriplate, Moly) on the end of the speedo where the cable goes in, replace the cable and go for a short ride.

You should hear it quieten almost immediately.

        • the traveling bike

is on the lift. I'm doing the fd swap and fought getting the drive shaft back in for hours. Finally pulled the swing arm and putting it back together tomorrow. I’m pulling and cleaning all the calipers and master cylinders also. Bought the venture cct and putting them on both bikes when they get in. Just a little prep fpr the XS north ride…
          It's effin hot out

            Thanks again Jim!

I took her out for a test ride that turned into a 4 hour bliss with no bugs in the teeth and without a neck ache from fighting the wind.

Actually, I did do that, and that is when the noise started. The needle has been waving around like a flag for some time now tho. I do plan on taking the speedometer out and cleaning it out and re-lubing to see if that helps.

              • Yeah, if the grease doesn't help, it pretty much has to come apart.

Have you, by chance, lubed the cable itself?

Cable was lubed when I put it on, brand new, about 500km ago. Still looks well lubed. I'm pretty sure it is the speedometer as the sound temporarily disappears when I smak the instrument. I do however need to check the lube of the drive assembly come to think of it.

                  • I brought my XS11 over to my brother's apartment, actually late last week. He is newly divorced and I figure he could use it to get out. I told him to keep it the rest of this year if he wanted to. (I ride my Raider).

Had a little bit of an issue with fuel leaking...just a mist settling on the side covers so yesterday I went up there and re-rigged the fuel lines and check for any slices in the lines. I sure hope I did it correctly. It ran great afterwards but really needs a longer ride to be sure all is fixed now.

K., if it's not the speedometer or the cable then check the grease in the speedometer drive hub down on the front wheel where the speedometer cable connects. You have to remove the front wheel to remove and check speedometer drive hub.

I thought the howling was my speedometer and the needle jumped around a lot until the drive washer sheared off when the speedometer drive hub seized because it didn't have any grease. Rebuilding it was not fun.

                        • I had a new rear tire put onto the 80G rear wheel. I will put it on the 78E to get away from the stock tube type rim, plus it has newer wheel bearings and seals.

But it was dumping rain all evening, so hopefully I can install it tomorrow.

                          • I didn't do anything to my bike today. I finished putting Special Ed's bike back together this morning, test rode it , then rode my bike from Santa Cruz to Simi Valley.

                            Both bikes are running great!

                            • The good and bad...

I took the bike in for new tires (Duros) and put it on the trailer for dropoff. Well Ol Murphy was along for the ride and one of my tie-downs slipped and allowed the bike to fall. Only thing damaged was a crushed right turn signal in rear where if fell on rail. So I ordered a replacement and am going to install now.

Frt tire still had good tread, but age checking was making me nervous. Rear was just plain worn out. I will feel much better now.

                              • Last night I removed the rear tire and cleaned four years worth of gunk off the wheel. Today I mounted and balanced a new tire and put everything back together. Tomorrow: breaking in the new tire.
