But that's just not true! You could still be ejected from the car and get road rash.

I bought my 1st bike in the dead of winter & bought all the Textile clothing -the very top of the line Joe Rocket jacket, pants, gloves & high Milwalkee leather boots (cowboy type) & 3/4 helmut to go with the bike b4 the spring came so I had it when I started to ride. I saved up to & waited to get it all at once. The roads around here are almost all tar & chip & we only half the mileage out of a set of tires (cage or bike) that people normally do. You can hear it grind the rubber when driving on it. Once at a local gas station (known the owner for over 20 yrs) he told me 'Man you look like your going to war" I told him if I hit the pavement "it is a war" He didn't laugh & niether did I. A few yrs later I got the leather jacket & chaps & to be honest I felt a little unprotected - don't wear them much at all - too hot. The textiles are much cooler with all the venting they offer. In the summer if I want to I can wear shorts under the textile paints & it is super cooling & still very protected. I would never do that with the chaps as jeans only under those for your butt. I try to have the most in my favour as the odds are always against us when on the bike. - Dan

                      I Want to Believe...

                      Thanks Tod!

As a blue jeans wearer I read the article and for a moment I almost breathed a sigh of relief. But then that good old "take a closer look" mentality took over.

Filling the bags with sand to simulate the weight of a human body would fool a scale but sand doesn't behave like a real torso when it hits the pavement and slides along. The initial impact of the test jig was softened. Like the way a dead blow hammer impacts. The sand spreads out the impact in time so there's no high load impact points as the jig settles from its initial shape into the final scooting down the roadway shape.

That final shape is not what a rider would take. The jig is flat against the road which spreads the weight/loading out to the total contact surface area. This effectively reduces the pounds per square inch and evens out the loading which I believe is the main factor for the blue jeans apparent abrasion resistance. A second identical test with a pair of official riding gear pants would make this a more meaningful and understandable test because we could then compare the abrasion resistances between the two different materials.

The jig being towed also is a factor. Whatever rope was attached between the rear of the car and the test jig had to pull the front end of the jig slightly upwards. This slight upwards angle at the front of the jig reduced the apparent weight at the leading edge. Again this lessened the abrasion. The rope/attachment method also prevented the material from bunching up in the front or tumbling. This would have likely resulted in a high pressure points where higher abrasion would have occurred.

The jig tested the materials tear resistance but only in a very limited way. No protection would be present once any material had torn, peeled back, and exposed the plastic bags/skin.

I applaud these folks for having the curiosity and drive to do this home version of MythBusters and show it to us. As far as making me more comfortable with riding while wearing blue jeans? Nope.

                      The truth is out there.

I don't suspect that any kind of protection will work the same way at any time twice in a row, there are just too many variables in any accident. I have gone for two long slides, once off a bike and once out of a jeep. From these experiences I can tell you that Carhartt work jeans protected me from road rash both times.

When I went out of the Jeep I got a broken ankle, a concusion, and a broken rib or two but not one trace of road rash even after sliding down both the shoulder and the blacktop for almost 200'. YES, I was wearing my seat belt but the impact from the other vehicle broke the Jeep right in two and both me and the belts were ejected. When I went down off the bike I slid on my backside for about 90' and actually got first and second degree burns on my butt but the Carhartts would still have been wearable had not the idiot EMS guy cut them off of me with a pair of bandage scissors despite my very vocal protests. I was wearing a leather jacket at that time and it did not come out near that well, had to be replaced but it had done its job and outside of the burns on my butt I walked away from that one in darn good shape.

Shorts, no way. It is not the safety issue as much as it is the fact that my legs have been compared to a pair of badly warped newell posts and no one wants to see them naked.

so it sounds like i need to buy some pants (sorry kat, just not into the whole exhibitionist thing like it sounds like you might be....and i am glad to see you back here too!) and a jacket. the jacket i can get down with, but the pants.....do i buy some chaps? are those worse? i just can't see myself in leather pants. i simply cannot bear the 80's hair band jokes from my friends....so what then? i agree that the test was biased, but i also agree that new denim would off a reasonable layer of protection. i guess i would rather be safe than right, so i sounds like at least chaps. man, that just isn't gonna look cool.....sad for me.

Both times I've been down I had on jeans, once with cheap leather chaps on, once without. I didn't skid far either time on my legs.

First was a highside into the ditch, but I did roll on the pavement a little. Small holes in knees if I remember right. No jacket of any kiind that time, just a t-shirt, lucky I only broke a pinky.

Second time was into a deer. Nice HD jacket. Not so nice anymore, but held up very well. Good leather is better, because the cheap leather chaps I had on still allowed a nice big 1.5" skinned spot on the knee. Cheap leather got a nice hole. Not sure about the jeans, they were cut off of me and thrown away I think. But it was an impact, slide a little on my shoulder and chest, and then roll thing, not an all sliding thing. If I would have had armor and better gloves I would have came out of it with only broken bones!

I'm not comfortable without good gear anymore. I switched to textile due to price and it had pads, let you know how it goes next time for comparison! I would have loved to get another jacket like I had, but they don't have armor. After seeing what my parents go through with each of them having a broken kneecap, gotta have armor pads.

I crrrriiiinnnnggge when I see shorts on a motorbike. heebeegeebeess. ick.
