  • Denim jeans while riding.

Here's an article a friend sent me. Make up your own mind... I thought it was interesting. I'd just like to see the results from around here though where they use chip seal. (Tar the road, then spread gravel over that.) It's a MUCH rougher pavement and resembles a cheese grater on the people I've picked up when I was a medic. BUT.. I don't think ANY clothing except a suit of armor would help on that.

I thought you preferred Daisy Dukes and a halter top to ride in.

While that test might show that abasively denim holds up...I am not buying this test...it cant accurately recreate the dynamics of a person wearing the denim and in a real world getoff...and from an impact to your body point of view this test is worthless...

Sometimes.. if nobody is around. At other times though, I may go the t-shirt, regular shorts, and sandals option.... since my legs obviously need some sunshine anyway.

At least I had eye protection?? lol.

                    riding gear

I have been riding since I was about 9-10 yrs old. I do not have any road rash yet on the old body. Clearly this is the result of my intense distrust of cages and their occupants who are blind and my golden rule of full riding gear/leather for any ride. Road rash is very painful, happens very quickly and will hurt for a long time. I actually cannot ride a bike without full gear. I feel unprotected and fearful without it. When I was younger I forced myself to wear the gear when on long runs by not having any luggage space to store the riding gear, it had to be worn or left behind. Old habits are hard to break and I still never allow for storage space for riding gear except rain gear. I see far too many riders w/o riding gear on , remember it cannot protect you when it is in the saddlebag. Wear it that is what it is for. thanx andreas

So... what does that have to do with jeans? Are you saying you disagree with the article and only body armor and leather will work?

That felt more like a sermon on your opinion. Sorry.

Although I am a believer in proper gear, I am yet to be able to afford it all. I finally got a nice jacket last year, which I love. However, I still ride in double front Carharts. It's not leather, but it's the toughest thing I own.

My First Gear Summer riding pants were "end of season" priced at $115 at Ridegear.com. If you search, you CAN find some good deals, just need to try and put some pennies away as you can. I KNOW it's hard for you now, but it's also worth the try.

Although that's a good price for those.. it's sure a lot more than a $15 set of wranglers, or even a $60 set of insulated Carharts. MANY of the people have these bikes simply because they are probably the best bang for the buck on a poor man's budget.

The question is.. does that high priced gear actually do a better job at protection or abrasion? I think padded gear would help with the innitial impact, but after that.. I don't know.

Yeah, I figured denim would be better than nothing, but didn't expect it to resist THAT much abrasion. Of course, there's a difference between a bag of sand and a kneecap, but I'm rather impressed with his results. I already found out the hard way that dress slacks don't resist much at all... Slid about 3 feet and I now have 2 circles on my left knee that will always remind me to wear my gear (and to never brake while turning).

I have 2 Frank Thomas armored jackets (a mesh one for summer and a non-mesh, insulated one for winter) that are designed to attach to their pants by a full-waist zipper. I've been considering investing in a pair lately. The mesh ones are only $70, but the solid, waterproof ones are $150+. Jeans are only $14 at Walmart though, and I can wear them when I'm not riding too...
