  • Test your 3D Vision

Below is a "StereoGram" which we'll call a 3D picture for now. I've heard a lot of different ways to SEE 3D pictures but so far the best how-to came from a member here, TopCatGr58:

"Hey Larry, as for teaching folks, the idea is truly getting the eyes to CROSS inwards, then relaxing enough to allow them to slowly merge back together just enough to make the 3rd image in the middle which WILL BE in true 3D type view. "

    So here's the 3D picture:

I chose the above image because it was something familiar, recognizable, and to some degree had appeal: Easy on the eyes and as easy to do as possible. If you could see the young lady in "3D" then vote Yes. Otherwise vote No. It's just that simple.

My goal at this point is to find out whether the members who can see "3D" are the majority or the minority here on the site. Depending on the outcome of this poll I will either place the 3D pics inside the main body of my posts or I will put a regular photo in and then include an external link to the 3D version.

For right now I'll give an example of the types of photos you'd likely see. TC made mention of how in order to see the 3D effect, our eyes had to Fuse the two pictures into one. So here's A pic of a fuseBox:

Followed by a closer look at where the fuses are:

And lastly a close up and personal look at the fuses:

(D'ya think I'm gonna be having trouble with my headlight in the near future??)

Thank you for taking the time to participate. That's the way a democracy works: satisfy as many of the members as possible while frustrating the least number of people. Your vote does count in this instance. (Not like when every two years we vote to replace the legislators who disappointed us with other legislators who have yet to disappoint us...)

Special thanks to those members who responded to the following thread:

I had to get my eyes only like 3-4" away from the screen to see the fuses clearly, but sure enough, I could "see" the depth. Friggin' sweet!

-BTW, I've never been able to get those 3D fuzzy pictures at the mall that were popular in the 90's.

My eyes are getting too old to try it! As I'm on a laptop most of the time, I would need to get too close, and the reading glasses don't help! I CAN see the first photo in 4D, but the rest just fused in to a messy bunch of wires and glass...

The Hooters pic was great, did you say there we some other pics on the page? What page? Do you remember when as a kid, your mom said "Don't cross your eyes that way, they will get stuck." Well I got stuck on the Hooters pic and couldn't look away!!!

So how exactly do you do the pics? I see the image in the forground remains the same, but the background is at a different angle.

Did anyone notice that the size of the image in 3d appears smaller than 2d? I noticed it right away.

Maybe TC could tell me if I need to get my eyes checked?

                            Housekeeping.....

                            bikerphil,

First time is the hardest. Sometimes a little practice helps. For you and xs11jack I'd suggest going here and giving it a few tries. Be warned that the 3D pics start out simple then get more and more complicated/busy.

                            http://www.xs11.com/forum/showpost.p...1&postcount=29

                            DiverRay,

From what TC said, getting older can sometimes help people see the 3D better. Here's one of those rare TC posts where he opens up the taps and the wisdom freely flows out:

                            http://www.xs11.com/forum/showpost.p...3&postcount=18

I'm using a laptop too. Also, I guess that the way the website automatically re-sizes the pics may be a factor. I know that sometimes one can click on the individual pics and make them bigger but that's too much of a hassle. This should show all the pics of the fuses 20-25% bigger and leave the test photo the original size:

                            http://www.xs11.com/forum/showpost.p...65&postcount=1

                            trbig,

No special equipment needed. See this:

                            http://www.xs11.com/forum/showpost.p...3&postcount=45

I'm just taking pics of things I do as I go along: Shift right-push button, shift left-push button. I bet that if you just walked around your garage taking pics of the engines and parts in plain sight that we'd all be the better for it.

In hindsight, that trip you made to the missile silo would have been a superb place to take 3D pics by using the "Cha-Cha" technique.....

                            redbone,

Saying the same thing as TC said but in a different way:

For those of you who don't know what these are, they are called stereograms, 3D pictures depending how you look at them. They sort of work like Magic Eye but they're a little different than those. Here's how to see them in 3D:

Cross your eyes while keeping your sight level with the computer screen. Seeing as there are two pictures below side by side that look the same, ;the objective is for your left eye to be looking at the right picture, while your right eye is looking at the left picture. Your eyes may not be used to doing this, so what it will look like is three blurry pictures at first instead of two clear ones. Since these pictures are 3D, you will have to change your focus to something hypothetically closer. This will put the 3D picture in focus then everything else blurry.

                            Thanks for voting!

i LOVE it when other optical people get involved. tc you did good! i can totally see it, but i have to focus on the MIDDLE of the three images and then let my eyes relax while still staying with the middle image. the only way i can describe it is the eyes kind of "give up" fighting and sees the "3d" image. you gotta work for it, but it is there.
