This semi-legal 'scam' has made the news lately, and it may not be PayPal but the seller. It seems that lots of vendors have signed up with these outfits (there's more than one) and they all offer 'discounts' on a sale to lure you in. And it's not just PayPal transactions, as this has been reported at other online sites as well. So if you're offered something for nothing, beware...

Yes those are out there, and I have actually taken advantage of them. I got a stamps.com membership for a month, and for the 9.95 I got winzip which was a savings. But it's easy to end up paying more that way than just paying for the product outright. But what was being mentioned about zone alarm is that when you purchase, unless you specifically refuse, by default your signing up for a renewable subscription, and as such part of the agreement you make is that they can charge to the payment source for the renewal automatically. It's not just paypal they can do this with, but credit cards and bank accounts as well (many places now also accept e-checks).
