  • Paypal warning

I got a nasty surprise early Monday. It seems Paypal is working with merchants to get your money. I have NEVER authorized an automatic draft from any account for anything to anyone. Yet I find Paypal has an agreement number (??) authorizing payment to Check Point Software Technologies Inc. (Zone Alarm)- it appears as if this number is generated without our knowledge when we order something and pay thru Paypal. All this happened without me being notified. It was by pure chance I found out when I did.

I opened a dispute with Paypal on Monday and today I find no dispute even listed.
When I tried to reopen the dispute Paypal would not allow it. No explanation or email or anything!!

Paypal is now owned by Ebay. I figgered I would warn everyone because most Paypal accounts withdraw directly from your bank accounts with a blanket agreement.

Did this come as an email? I have never heard of anything like this, and I have had a paypal account for almost 8 years or so. Some of the common paypal scams send an email about a transaction with a link, and if you click on it it would take you to fake site, which might be what is happening. I would suggest changing your paypal password as fast as you can, as it's possible you have been scammed. I get about 4 or 5 scam emails a month, some of them are scary in how close them come to a real paypal message, but I NEVER use a link from an email to go to paypal, I alway use my favorites entry.

          No

This is PAYPAL!! I too have had an account with Paypal for a number of years (over ten). This came about from ordering and paying thru Paypal.

This is the email sent after the dispute was made.

Hello john newman, Recently, you told us that you didn't recognize a payment sent from yourPayPal account. We are currently investigating the following transaction: -----------------------------------Details of disputed transaction ----------------------------------- Seller's Name: Check Point Software Technologies Inc.Seller's Email: paypal@us.checkpoint.comSeller's Transaction ID: XXXXXXXXXXXX Transaction Date: Dec 7, 2009Transaction Amount: -$53.95 USDInvoice ID: XXXXXXX Your Transaction ID: XXXXXXXXXXXXCase Number: XX-XXX-XXX-XXX Buyer's Transaction ID: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX The seller has been asked to provide more information about thistransaction. During our investigation, the funds will not be available in your PayPal account. If the case is decided in your favor, we will refundyou for the amount of the transaction. Today I logged onto Paypal and found the details about authorization # on file. (I NEVER AUTHORIZE an autodraft for ANYTHING!) The case was closed and there was no notification from Paypal. I tried to send a nasty email to
paypal@us.checkpoint.com but it did not go thru. This is ZONE ALARM.

            No outside scam

            This is without a doubt a case of Paypal working with merchants to rip us off. I have seen phising and scams before (hundreds of times). This is not from outside. Paypal even sent the following today;

Dear John Newman, We understand that you may have recently filed a claim reporting the unauthorized access of your PayPal account. We appreciate your cooperation during this process. As part of PayPal's Commitment to excellence, we would like to ask you to take just a few minutes to answer questions regarding PayPal's unauthorized account access claim process. To respond to our survey, please click on the web address below. If that does not work, please cut and paste the entire web address into the address field of your browser. NOTE: Please respond within five days. After 5 days, this invitation will expire. http://surveys2.incontact.com/paypal...5-8BA57E575B65 Thank you for your feedback and continued business with PayPal! John,

I am at a loss really. All I know is that I have had no such charge show up to date.

I've had a similar thing happen to me when I bought something from ebay.

When I cashed out a pop up asked if I would like to save 10 or 15 % on my purchase. Of course I said yes and I promptly received my discount.

About 2 or 3 weeks later I noticed a charge from some " savings and rewards club " that I couldn't identify.

Checked out the company online and found out I wasn't the only one duped in this fashon.

Explained it to my bank and they put an end to the unauthorized automatic monthly payments and even got the money back that had already been taken.

I to have had a paypal account for several years with no problem. Knock on Wood! But I have like others got emails that look real enough to almost fool me. I just send them to spoof@paypal.com They usually send a email letting me know whether it was real or not. So far all the ones I have got have been fake or spoof's. Hope I never have any troubles with paypal. I do allot of ebayin.

I discovered years ago that paypal doesn't seem to care much about timely action on disputes. These days I use a credit card on paypal for most ebay transactions and the times I've been ripped off the problem was resolved quickly thru the credit card company while pretty much being ignored by paypal.

The bank account I use (to maintain a confirmed address) has only $`10 in it, just enough to keep it open. If I sell something I immediately transfer the $$ out of paypal into this account, then into another account that is never used for anything online. I have screwed up and "overdrawn" the account by forgetting to change the paypal payment option but my bank contacted me and I was able to transfer funds to cover without "fines". This is another protection from automatic charges.

I recently tried to sell something on ebay and stated in the description that I would accept money orders. The auction was rejected until I removed all references to check or money orders. Apparently ebay/paypal is moving toward only using paypal for payments.

While I don't really trust ebay or paypal completely it is nice to have a place to buy and sell stuff that is more than just a local newspaper ad.

                          Rockjok,

I think your method would be the best if it were not for the CC's trying to buffalo their customers into paying more. Again, I have completed over 300tranactions on Ebay (most completed with Paypal) in the last 10-12 years and this is the first issue I have had with Paypal. BUT....... it sure leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and a warning in my brain.

                          FOREWARNED is forearmed.

I think by default Zone Alarm will renew your subscription each year unless you go into the options and tell it no. We've had Zone Alarm for years but I tell it to never auto renewal.
