    1982 VIN Issue

Spent lots of time at the NY DMV with a strange problem. Title for the little XS doesn't have a 17 character VIN which was mandated by the US in the early 80s. The bike does have a sticker on the frame with a 17 digit number, but the number stamped on the frame is the shorter sequence that is on the title. My Insurance co. was clueless and said that they couldn't process my insurance and proof of ins. for the DMV w/o 17 characters (their automated system is set up that way). Two agents at the DMV told me this was an anomaly with 1982 Yamahas. Finally got the insurance co. to issue a proof of insurance card with the shorter number. What a mess!

Anyone else familiar with this "glitch?"

Had the same problem with an '82 Virago.
Texas finally titled it with a rubbing off of the engine, which had the full number.
The frame sticker also had the correct number of digits.
You're right, must have been an '82 thing.

Only emissions controlled vehicles were required to have a17 digit VIN. Since motorcycles were not emissions controlled until later on in the game, they didn't have have the 17 digit VIN, or a VECI, or anything other than an idle screw blocking plug.

I went through the same ordeal with my insurance company, and finally ended up telling them deal with it or I will get a different insurance company.

Heck, better than me. I can't find anyone who can find an '82 XJ1100. So.. everybody I've insured my bike through, (Farmers, Geico, and now Allstate) show me having an '82 xs1100. Probably screwed if I ever actually NEED the insurance.

Then there is my insurance co, which insists that my 80G is an XJ. They also insist that my 89 Camaro RS is a Z28, don't I wish!

Iteresting.......had same issue when I bought The Bentley new in 81...............and again buying it back in 05. First time LEO came out to dealership to inspect and was gonna acid whatever the numbers on case when dealer stopped him and told him that he better stop right there unless Colo. State Patrol was in a position to take on Mother Yamaha. Then I told him if a drop of acid hit that case, he personnally would be liable to the tune of $5500 plus any and all inconveniances caused there of.......he stopped and verified it legally all good. Was a bit funny to see the look he had after dealer reammed him. Wasen't as bad the second time some 24yrs. later as DMV said to get a dealer to verify. Easy, just cost me an extra $15.

                Hmmm...
My XJ has been registerd in 3 states, (Wisconsin, Arizona, Colorado) and was registered in a 4th state (Maine) when I bought it. Never had a problem anywhere with either registration or insurance. Will have to check, but believe the current Colorado does list it as an '82 XJ1100J.
