The wire that comes from the + side of the battery to the box, is that the only connection from that side of the battery? If so that box is the probably starter solenoid and if you've been cranking on it it WILL be a little warm. Mine is cylindrical in shape and looks to be the original but yours or may have been replaced at some time. There should be 2 small wires, and 1 large wire running to/from it also. The 2 smaller ones being to the starter button and the kill switch, the larger to the starter.
If it is melted, (the box), there may be a problem with the starter drawing too much amperage.That could take away power to the coils and make it difficult to get a hot enough spark to start. Especially when the ambient temp is cold.
In my experience these engines don't really like to start when it's COLD anyway.
