  • Finally a Successful conclusion

Finally I got it all together and running. Turned out that because I didn't put a spring and bolt on the the clutch pack while I was putting it in the pack shifted a little and the bottom steel was out of align so the pack didn't go all the way together. Took it apart and did it right and now everything is good. I figure I'll have to adjust the clutch a few times in the first couple hundred miles, and I plan on changing the oil after no more than 500 miles, but the new motor is running strong and quiet. It felt good to take it around the block and then down to the gas station to fill it up.

Now, I gotta to over to my folks house tomorrow and put their nieghbors timing light on it and get it timed right, and then when I finally get paid (employer didn't make payroll, so I have a job but no money (well maybe I still have a job, depends on how long it take them to make payroll)), I can order the carb sticks I found on ebay and do a proper sync (rather than the bench sync I did).

But, so far I'm quite happy, even with the fact that all my problem with the clutch were my fault (just like I thought all along). Remember to make sure that pack stays together when putting it in, it's really easy to get it out of align while inserting it (at least is was for me).

Thanks to everybody for all the suggestions and support on this project, you guy rock!!

First ride after getting it all together is always cool!!!

btw, fancy carb sticks won't sync em any better than a single $6.00 vac gauge, 20 inches of hose, small size hose clamp and a bolt to pinch the hose will. (does take a little longer tho)

      I'm with MRO,

I use the setup in the tech tips regarding the piece of 2-1/2" or 3" PVC pipe with caps on both ends and barbs stuck into the caps to take the surges out. Then I use my Mity-Vac for the gage. Move it one carb at a time to synch 1-2, then 3-4 then the pairs. Does take a few minutes longer than using the carb tune or something that reads all four.

But I don't think it takes any longer than those using the four gage setup in that I don't spend time calibratign the four gages to each other before I synch. JMO

Yep, nothing feels better than that first ride when everything is working right! Especially when you did the work to make her purr like that!

        Cy,

Glad to hear you had success! That's good!

Sorry to hear you're going through that with your job & the paycheck...

I've seen a lot of tough economic times before myself... being self-employeed. But I have to say I fully understand the financial hardships... this has been the worse year we've experienced in our business since we started it in 1977. (Which wasn't a great year then, either!)

Making payroll & keeping the bills paid has become a struggle for us as well.

Hang tough, and glad to hear you figured out your clutch woes!

Thanks everyone. I went out for a 50 mile ride today (that's all I had time for) and it went very well. I noticed a slight rattle under medium acceleration between 4k and 5k, but only there and it doesn't seem like a serious sound. It runs strong, and MAN does the power come on at 4k, it's like someone lit off a jato bottle or something. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of power before 4k, but I can sure feel the power curve kicking in.

I did two speed runs (as far as they go) going from 60 to something over 85 on the freeway in 5th. Then later I did a high rpm run to almost redline in 3rd which was sure moving. I've got it going good now, but I guess I'm going to need a fork brace and SS brake lines so I can turn and stop as well as I can go. I did find that the sintered pads I have on the front while they don't fade, don't give the stopping power of more normal pads so I think I'm going to go to some good EBC organic pads on the front.

Oh, and except for that little rattle at 4k, this motor is SO much quieter than the original . It gives an almost turbine whine under heavy ecceleration which I'm guessing is from the straight cut gears in the middle drive. And I am impressed with the growl from the Jardines at high rpm, much different from the rumble at lower rpms.

All in all, I'm quite happy with how it turned out, I just wish it hadn't taken me so long to get there.

Look at it this way, if it had not taken so long to get there, the victory would not feel nearly as sweet!!

The rattle at 4K rpm -

Check the sidestand. I know it sounds strange, but I have exactly the same thing. The rubber bumper that cusions the side stand in the "up" position is missing on mine, and when it gets up to 4K, it rattles. Above and below, the rattle goes away. I only figured it out when I sat it in the driveway and revved it up to 4K after a run. While I was on it, the noise was there, I got off and put the stand down, and the noise was gone.

Oh, I forgot to mention two things that I learned on my test ride. One, when pulling into a dirt parking lot, don't stop in a spot where one of your feet come down in a 4 inch deep rut. If you do, the bike is going down.

That was the bad thing I learned. The good thing that I learned was that my tipover switch does indeed work . Not that I wanted to learn that, but I am sure glad that it did. Oh, I also learned that the technique for picking up a heavy bike that I have read on several sites does indeed work.

Hey, look at the bright side, at least you learned all that at close to or no speed, and in a parking lot. Much better than at speed or at a stop light in traffic.

I guess that's true, and I did fare better than an unnamed member who went down in a parking lot in Texas. No rash or gravel needing to be extricated from my arm.
