I have deer whistles on all my vehicles. Not perfect, but its better than nothing. I stuck them on the ears holding the headlight. Seem to help with buzzards, meadowlarks, and turtle doves. Effective on deer except during mating season and fawns don't seem to pay attention to them. Even if they are 90% effective, it's better than nothing.

Sounds to me like deer whistles give them a good target to hone in on.I think point your bike at the deer, apply breaks, wait for the stupid deer to move, then steer the other way.Best chance??

I think the problem is more with the deer that you DON'T see. If you have time to register that there is a deer in the road ahead, and have time to adjust your path in any way, you're already one step ahead. The purpose of the whistles (and other such devices) is to scare the deer away from the road before you arrive and they are either right there as you turn a corner, or they jump out at you as you pass.
Maybe they should do the same to deer as they do for bears - shoot 'em with rubber bullets (in non-hunting times/areas) and chase 'em with dogs to make them afraid of anything related to humans.1980 XS850SG - Sold

I don't think there is a good answer for the problem with deer.
I once saw a VW bug ahead of me on the freeway in Oregon get hit in the side by a deer...came out of nowhere and jumped into the side of the car. How do you avoid something like that?
I think deer are genetically programmed to run from animals that can only do say 30-40mph, and they just don't get the whole thing about cars moving at such high rates of speed, their poor little brains can't comprehend something moving at 60mph or more, so they make stupid judgments about when to cross.
Then they panic and go "oh s**t, I ain't gonna make it" and try to turn around sometimes.
I think all you can do is be careful and hopefully not win the deer crossing lottery.Guy

Actually...
A deer will stand by the side of the road and wait for the car headlights to illuminate the road they will try to cross. Sometimes you get to see their eyes reflecting in the lights. Best thing to do is go slow at night where there are deer and even then you might still get hit.
PS: ABATE isn't the only one helping keep our riding rights. The bigger and better one is the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) and I highly recommend everyone here join. Sure there is. Hunt with REAL bullets, not rubber ones, and help control the population. Tree huggers have gotten so bad that it's politically correct to put more value on an animal's life than a person's.
The problem is the deer populations are exploding in most states.
State Farm, the nation's largest auto insurer, estimates that there were more than 1.2 million claims for damage in crashes with animals during the last half of 2007 and the first half of 2008. The company says animal strike claims have increased 14.9 percent over the past 5 years. Insurance claims usually don't specify the animal involved, but other data show that deer are the main ones.
So.... Save a biker and go eat Bambi!

We have way too many deer here where I live. One guy has hit a deer in nearly the same spot almost a year apart to the day over the last two years.
If I was him, I'd stay off the bike for a week give or take around this time of year."If A equals success, then the formula is: A = X + Y + Z. X is work. Y is play. Z is keep your mouth shut." - Albert Einstein

Last year in the fall when I was coming down from the Talimena drive mountains in the dark, I decided I had better watch for deer.. just about the time I almost hit a bear about the size of a cow. I decided there's worse out there to hit than a deer... But what about THIS!!?
I think you'd have a hard time one-upping that one... lol.
