Just Checking in...
Hello there. I recently aquired an 81 XS1100 SH Eleven Special. I have ridden dirt bikes my entire life, and this is my first street bike. I got it in a trade for an air conditioner.
The bike looks pretty good. It has 31,000 miles on it. It does run all though not very well. I was surprised to find this site but am glad I did. I intend to do some restoration to it and make it a daily rider. So far the information I have found here has been helpful.
Currently, I am waiting on a manual from the local Yamaha dealer. It starts easily, though not choked. It idles fine if not just a bit rough. But off idel to about 2500 to 3000 rpm, it tries to cut out and die. If I feather the throttle, I can get the rpm's up and it seems to want to run. I have also noticed that it seems to get hotter on the right side then the left. The exhaust seems cooler out of the left too. It was ridden very sporadically for the past few years but they claimed that they had the carbs cleaned up recently. But I have my doubts.
I also notice a strong gas odor at idle speeds. As far as I can tell so far, the bike appears to be factory stock.
Again, thanks for the sight, I look foward to tapping the oceans of knowledge here.
