Nice but it will also need a new set of tires before it will be safe to ride. I don't think I want one bad enough to pay that kind of bucks for it. They were a great around town and back road twisties bike...

$6k for a new SR500

Sounds like a good deal to me if you are willing to hold it for three or four years.

The SR500 has had a production run of over thirty years. They only sold it in the States for four years, but it has been a cult favorite in Japan, Europe and Australia for three decades.

Many custom parts are available in Japan but they are very costly. I got a used SuperTrapp Stainless exhaust system for $600 recently on eBay from Taiwan, for ~ $600.

A hot tip from the SR500 forum is that "Deux ex Machina" (a Japanese custom parts retailer) is opening a West Coast store (LA) that will offer these trick parts in the North American market for the first time. The thinking there is that this will cause and explosion of interest in the SR500 here, and the value of any stocker will skyrocket within a year of the store opening.

I didn't pay that much for my SR with 9500 miles on it, but I did pay well over a grand more than the bike cost new, the same with my first SR as well.

My new one is already put away as an investment, if anybody can ever talk me into selling it.

Years ago someone took a piece of canvas and smeared pigmented oil on it. At the time it was next to wortless. Today the sky is the limit.
As in art, the motto is....Buy something you like because you may be looking at it for a long time.

For $23,000 it had better be made entirely of unobtanium, faster than a Gixxer 1000, and handle better than a new Ducati. I might also expect it to wash my laundry and mow the yard.

Well see, that's the thing, the '78E SR500 (first issue) is getting to be pretty rare. It's the most sought after year and model. The $23k bike pictured above is built from a grey market SR400. Think what it would cost if they used an original SR500E like one of my two.

But that ain't necessarily what it cost...it's what they're asking for it.

I had a MotoGuzzi Centauro, one of 270 total imported (out of about 1,200 to 1,300 made) into the US. They also made the Daytona RS, and only about 70-80 were ever imported, and I guarantee you that either one of those would outperform that bike, but you would be insane to pay $23,000 for either of them.





I guess some people just have money to throw away.

Once again, I am actually a fan of light singles like the Ascot or the SR500, but they are overvalued. As is the Deus.
