That clip and washer are probably what is supposed to be holding the oil pump idle gear on it's post. It is located right behind the clutch basket. Put the washer back on, and replace that circlip, so it stays on. It's not uncommon for it to jump off, but it can cause a really nasty problem if the gear moves out of place too much.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Hard to tell from the pics if the forks are straight, just eyeball them. Couldn't tell if you ground both sides of the dogs and slots. Both sides need to be done or the bike can pop out of gear on a downshift or on engine braking, DAMHIK.2H7 (79) owned since '89

On the shift forks, look at the ends that run in the groves of the gears. If you see a "grinding" look, replace them. If they look polished or satin finish, you should be good. As of three years ago new gears, already back cut, could be had from Yamaha for about $200 per pair. I have NOT checked lately, so I don't know if that is still an option.Ray Matteis

Ok the forks have no visible wear on the surfaces that ride the gear groove. Light wear on the sides. Im not gonna use the gears that I back cut. The 3 dogs no longer contact their mating wall evenly in one of the indexes. I had to remove so much material from both sides of each to get to a nice edge that Im sure the parts are now weakened. I have been hitting ebay for good used and new tranny parts but have really been searching all of MI for a good running entire bike on craigslist.

Member andreashweiss is our local parts depot, and the last post he made mentioned that he had 2 sets of brand new gears, still in the box, ready to go. I'd suggest contacting him if that's the route you decide to go.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Source for new backcut gears. Best prices for new you'll find. Don't forget to look into the "washer swap" mod for 2nd gear.
