  • New member gonna pick up my XS1100 today

Nice site! I am currently the proud owner of a 13,000 mile 1978 Yamaha XS750E triple. Today I am picking up a 1979 Yamaha XS1100..F? (Not a Special) I love my triple but couldnt help thinking of the 92 plus hp of the big 1100 inline four. 1100 has 22,000 miles and is in good cosmetic condition. Only runs on 2 cylinders and needs a rear tire. Cost me $400. This site was highly recommended to me by the guys at yamahatriples.org. Im looking forward to using this site to aid in my resurrecting of the 1100 and I will be sure to use the site search function on this site before blindly posting!

Welcome to the site. You will find it more than helpful. A lot of these guys here have extensive knowlage on these bikes. The only limitions here are the ones your afraid to tackle (like me and my 1st gear problem).
    Again welcome,
    Dan

      HooWah!!

So you're adopting the 1100 and giving your 750 a big brother to play with?

That's sweet! Only thing missing is you passing out the free cigars...

Let us know when you've got him standing up on all four cylinders. We just love those first steps pictures too!

        Hi there and welcome,
        Here's how the letters work.
the F by itself suffix sez it's a '79 Standard. An S in front of the year designation letter sez it's a Special. An L instead of an S sez it's a Midnight Special.
If either the outer two cylinders or the middle two don't run, first check the spark. Most likely one of the pickup wires is broken or one of the coils is dead.
Any other combination is most likely a fuel problem.
Don't sweat the rear tire, it'll need a new one every 7,000 miles anyway.
And just in case you hadn't noticed, the XS11 engine runs backwards which is why the cam chain tensioner is on the front.

It is a little different to post pics. You need to go get an account at a place like photobucket, post your pics there, then link to them here. Easiest way to do that is go to photobucket and find the img link in the drop down, copy it, and then on a new line in your XS11 post, paste the img link.

I have been needing to open a photo bucket account forever. I better quit putting it off.

I did a cyl psi test on the 1100 and got about 150-153psi on all 4. The right 2 cyls didnt fire because the petcock on that side does not flow fuel when on. It does in prime (maybe a plugged vac line or gunk in the petcock.) I pulled the carb bank and reset all float levels to 1" per my haynes. (even though they looked good) The PO put in rebuild kits and the carbs were real clean. It fired right up but only hits on all 4 with the choke on at max. L side exh still blowing fuel smoke and the far right carb is spitting fuel from the hole above the airbleed at entry. No biggie just fuel gremlins. The real concern is the tranny. On the stand with the bike running I put it into first. Let the clutch out and the loud knocks really kick in. Like 2 ball peen hammers clapping of one another. The drive shaft is tight to the mid drive- no bolts backing out. Using a long screw driver as a stethoscope I cant determine if the knocking is is louder at the gearshift lever area or the mid drive area. Im gonna search the site.

Do a search for 1st/2nd gear/transmission problems. Welcome to the world of XS.
                    4 gears for $400...not bad.

I redid my cyl pressure test as I was not holding the throttle wide open. I have 175 psi across the board. That part sounds good. Fuel problem- the carbs are dumping too much fuel into engine- all four. I checked the floats to see if when they drop they fall to far and jam the needle- they do not and the level is set at 1 inch. Man the thing is loud compared to my XS750. The mufflers look to be the OEM units. Are stock XS's loud and rappy?

Loud?? Rappy?? Maybe there's a baffle broken inside your Mufflers?

go to your photo in photobucket and hover your pointer over it. A list of link types should appear on your screen. Select the one that says "IMG", right click and select copy.

Then come to your reply/post here at XS11 and get on a new line

                            Like this one

And right click and hit paste. then hit return a couple times and continue with text or another pic. hth
