  • GPS TomTom One 130

I know this has been discussed but cannot find the thread. A company here has refurbished ones at $59.00 with factory warranty.
I also know they were discussing the waterproof box/mount to put them in, this would be of great help also.
Anything on this GPS will be appreciated greatly.
    Thanks ALL

      My 2 cents

I own a TomTom one and I love it but be aware there is a draw back. You have to pay to update the maps. I have a major Hwy that was built 5 years ago and I bought my Tomtom last year and it was not on it and i can not add it myself you have to download the updates at about $90 a year. But again I LOVE MY TOM.

        Just my 2 cents.

I bought the Garmin 550. Its weather proof. Bought the bar mount for the bike. And love it compaired to other Tom Tom's(borrowed). My bike has the cigarette lighter for charging the thing. I also Boat and love it for that too, it came with the window suction cup thing and I just suction it right to the speedo in the boat.

I would like to know the distance the screen, on your Garmin Nuvi 500, covers when you zoom all the way in (like 145’ X 115’ or what ever). Or, if you zoom all the way in, and then walk slowly around a 20 foot diameter circle, what size is the circle on the screen? I would like to get a new waterproof GPS for the bike but would like to use it for fishing too. For fishing purposes, I would like to get one that zooms down to a screen that shows a 20’ diameter circle as about ¼” diameter circle on the screen. A bigger circle would even be better. My hand held Magellan doesn’t zoom in far enough and shows the 20' circle as a dot.

Also, does it show slow speeds (0.3 to 3 mph), like when you are walking in ruff terrain or trolling for fish.

              Thanks,
              Bob

                Bob...

You want an all in one!.. lol. Use a cheap GPS to get you within 20 feet of where you want to be, then use your fish finder for trolling speeds and exact locations.

I will check my cheapie Garmin for you today though for the things you ask. They make a waterproof/shockproof one for a motorcycle.. but they ain't cheap. You could do as many of us do though.. When it rains, slide a ziplock bag over the top of it and close it off best you can at the bottom. Or stick it inside the map compartment of your tank bag inside a ziplock. They will work for several hours on battery power. I rode all the way home from Eureka Springs this last spring.. about 7 hours... on battery power and it hadn't used half of the battery's power... although it's a rechargeable battery and I suspect this run time will get less and less over time.

                  Well.. My findings are...

The Garmin zooms in pretty dang close and will show speeds in tenths of a MPH under 10mph. Do you realize how slow you have to walk to go less than 1 mph??

ANyway, the bad news is... These GPS units are based on roads and maps, not geodetic coordinates per se. They will give you a lat and long coordinate, but if you ever want to get there, it's going to try to figure out the best ROAD to get you there. I believe these things are going to be some lost SOB's out on a lake with no roads telling you to get to your favorite fishing spot.

I think you're best suited to get one of the small handheld GPS recievers that simply tell you to go north or south or whatever and a distance to your location. I haven't shopped for one, but it would seem to me that they'd have a combo fishfinder/gps by now that's affordable. I would think they'd be waterproof/shockproof also.

Anyway, sorry not much help, Bob.

Tod, you are right. I played with a Garmin Nuvi 255W. These types of GPS are not going to work for fishing for a bunch of reasons. Guess I’ll have to hope that my old GPS in the boat keeps working. Now, for traveling, do I just get a cheap one, spend an extra $100 to get the waterproof one, or keep on using my old Magellan? Maybe I’ll put it on the Xmas list the kids have been asking for.

The Garmin Nuvi 500 has been tested under water for 30 minutes.

I just bought the 255w, and IIRC, it has a walking mode that will give you the direction to go...

I'll check and report back. Worst part about it so far is it isn't very bright in direct sunlight. Oh and it isn't waterproof.

Yeah, it has bicycle and pedestian modes, but as far as I can tell it still gives you the road to walk on. Although, I haven't walked out in a lake to see what it does then.....

After messing with it, the pedestrian mode will tell you to get as close as possible on the nearest road then guide you in the rest of the way.

Bohn Frazer and "Another unnamed ex-member" both had the high dollar Garmin GPS that were waterproof, and both of them have messed up already.

Like I said, I have the cheapie.. it's a Garmin 200 which they aren't making any more, but Wally World still had them for a little over $100. When it rains, I just stick it in a ziplock and stick in my clear map section on my tank bag.

That being said, your old Magellan has taken you all over the country pretty reliably.. I'm a big fan of the "If it ain't broke don't fix it." BUT.. if the kids are buying.. then what the heck! lol.

The screen zooms in to a 20' screen and I do believe that it is a 3.5" screen. I do not know how well you can see through a zip lock when wet, but you can always turn the volume up to help guide when not too visible if you do not have a water proof one.?.?.???
Mine has the ability to load a waterway program in it. I do not have this yet!!! For now I just set mine to "Off Road" which will get you there the way the crow flies. I pick the spot on the larger map and say go. It gives you a blue straight line to your destination and how many miles. On a twisting river or a lake that has areas that you want to avoid, I can see were this will not help at night, but during the day I try and follow the blue "route line" and so far on larger lakes and rivers it will take you right there.
                            Hope this helps more.

TRBIG, I was curious about your comment when you say "both of them have messed up already". Are you saying that the Garmin Nuvi units don't perform well? They're big bucks, so I was wondering if maybe they aren't all they're advertised to be.
