        Hi Sharan and welcome,
nice work, well done. My son has also put "less conspicuous" signals on his bike and I'll tell you the same as I told him, 95% of car drivers can't see your bike even with the big ol' stock signals flashing at them, let alone those tiny things.

We had a working 1100 XS special, and one for parts. It's been modified a tad...So (technically) it's an 80-82 XS 1100 Special.

I'll have to consult with my partner on this

and I'm changing my guess too... at least one of the engines is from an 81 with side covers from an 80(?)... so I'll await the verdict from your partner...

Hmm...I know the engine side covers are 80 model or later. And the seat and rail are from an 80 or newer. My guess is 80 model bike.

I did notice the front fender went through some changes.

              Very nice looking bike.

              Welcome to the mayhem!!

My patner , knows more about this bike than I do. I helped him get it back on the road again. I joined because he hasn't the time to be posting, But we both though it would be nice to share it with you all.
He's done all the work on this Bike himself over the past 30 years! It's an awesome bike, been on the road for about as long....

But we'll definately post the "ins and outs" of the bike ASAP
The pics are from a cell, only ones I have at the moment,we'll work on better pics too

                  I don't think so, Don...
At least in the first few pics... the timing cover has the ring on it that only came on the 81... and all (I think) of the pics of the stator cover have the ring...

The plastic side covers are from an 80 though - no checkmark like on the 81 and only the 80 and 81 Special side covers interchanged with each other (although it is possible to modify the 79 covers to fit, I think) unless that's what you were talking about... in which case I'll shut up now...
                  (yeah... made me laugh too)
                  lol

You know that is exactly what I was looking for and I was certain I did NOT see that ring in any of those photos Must be time to see the optomotrist. Although in picture 14 it is pretty clear to me that there is no wring in the timing cover.

Nope, I meant the engine side covers. The plastic ones look like 80 to me also.

                          Very Cool!

Nothing wrong with giving your bike it's own personality.

OK, figured I'd take a guess as well on the year.

From the black paint on the drive (left of real wheel), it's black in the older photos. I just sold my 81 SH and that too was black there. My 80 SG that I still have is silver like the way the bike in the photos is painted now.

Just like my SH, I took the tank and battery covers from my SG and swapped them. I like the candy red I had a body shop paint on the 81 parts more than the maroon on the 80 parts. Since my 80 SG was the one that ran, I chose to go with the candy red......boy, I've got to be confusing you all by now.

So anywaaaaaaaay...the 80 SG side covers are just like the ones the OP posted in her photos where as the 81 SH covers have the emblems with the check underneath as someone mentioned above.

I really need to take a "Writing Skills" course.

I'm guessing your bike is (like mine I just sold) an 81 XS1100SH with 80 SG side covers.
