  • New bike in the stable

    Hi everyone,
I just picked up my second XS this past Saturday. Its a 1979 XS 1100 Special, has 25K miles and all original except the front head light and front signals. The owner said he cleaned them carbs and they are surprisingly clean enough for it to start/idle well and rev, but he didn’t put the air box back together… Besides some obvious maintenance like cleaning the break system, putting all new fluids in, tires(?), and fuel filters on, the only thing it “needs” is a battery, air filter and some attention to electrical connections. I bought it without a title, but the NYS Title Bureau says they don’t have anything in their system as the title has been inactive for longer than 10 years (inspection says '94). I was told all I need is a bill of sale and a notarized letter from an officer stating he check the vin and it came back clean/not on system, and they will issue me a title. Here is a pic and a walk around while its running.

They don't wail like a screeching ninja, the don't rumble like a harley. They just growl like a spactic, stressed out badger waiting to rip your face off and eat your soul." Trainzz~RIP~

Haha didnt think of it. "Hey ma, now dont be mad, but i went and bought somethin you may not like... it does have a pretty red bow on it though!"

Just need to get the petcocks to stop leaking. Im not sure if these are the origional petcocks or not. Do the '79 special petcocks have: on, off, pri, resv?

Not a bad pic from the cell eh?

The differences in the petcocks are between the Specials and Standards. You have a Special there, so it should have the Octy, with on, off, Prime, and Reserve. You can buy rebuild kits from georgefix on ebay.

Yeah I saw the Octy down in there lurking... really, Im considering going to plan'ol on/off petcocks... might cost a little more right now but will be "problem free" in the long run. Any cons to takin out the Octy? Thanks

Only con really is that you then have to replace the petcocks. Actually, you don't have to, as long as you plug the forward ports and make sure you turn them off when you stop, and make sure your float valves are not leaking. I dunno.. I like the extra insurance...

              VMarshy...
Bugs nailed it pretty much on the "Cons" of removing the Octy...

Just don't forget to shut off your petcocks... if you have good float valves, it shouldn't matter... but if for any reason you have a problem or they don't seal... and you leave the petcocks on... you'll either find a large puddle of gas under the bike, (where it comes out the airbox,) or wind up with it in the oil, or both. DAMHIK....
