  • Elusive midnight special

I remember reading about an elusive XS1100 that everyone had seen ads or heard about but never seen. Can anyone tell me which model it is?

The mythical machine is supposed to be a Midnight Maxim - ie a black and gold version of an XJ1100. I've never seen one, or seen an ad for one.

I believe that some of the smaller versions are out ther, like maybe the 750 but not the 1100.

I have actually seen a XJ 650 Midnight Maxim. But I have never seen, or heard of an XJ 1100 Midnight.

I don't think so. NO gold rims or trim. Probably just a Maxim 750 with a bunch of extra black paint.

I was just wondering because the guy who has the 81 MNS I am looking at says he has access to a 1100 Midnight Maxim. I was sure it was the missing link model, so to speak but needed to check with you guys. I am betting he has a smaller version too but I have not yet seen it. The 81 MNS has a 79 motor in it with 79 vacuum advance timing and a 4ro ignition box and the previous 4 owners have not been able to make it run well....I wonder why! It has 38,000 kilometers on it and is mostly stock other than the actual engine. I think for the 300 Canuk bucks he wants for it I should be buying it.

I am probably going to ride out and look at the 81LH again today and maybe I can get a look at the other one too. I will see what he has for info.

Sounds like a good snag there Rasputin..........and yes, Yammy did a Midnite Maxim and also did a Midnite Virago. They also did a Midnite in the "baby" Virago(250cc).
