  • Failing Sound Check

Below you will find 2 photos of DJinNH failing the sound check point that was set up in Market Square in Portsmouth N.H
He was on his new Yamaha Raider
We sat there and watched them set up the checkpoint. So Don decides he is going to go chat with the police which included Portsmouth city, N.H State
    and Rockingham County Sheriffs Dept's.
They were all very cordial and invited all of us standing there watching to "come on over" with our bikes.
I told Don to go ahead and Id go after him. So he gets over there and after its all said and done he is at 109 to 110 decibels.
    N.H limit is 106
They tell him no big deal and it should be an easy fix and thanks for stopping by.
I have a Kerker with the packing removed so when the nice police man said
we are not here to bust ba--- why don't you go get yours. I said Ill be right back
I went over and disappeared into the crowd
All in all they were very nice. We watched several bikes fail with no tickets or warnings written, but I have this saying about voluntarily sticking yourself into a cheese grater

Just to add, as Gary said, the police were all very nice about it. They said they just wanted to educate us bikers.

I replaced my stock pipes on my Raider just a couple of weeks ago, not to get a louder bike but simply because I did not like the stock double pipes. I got the Vance & Hines 2 into 1 just for the look of them.

I do not have a tachometer on my bike so they use some instrument that is sort of like a tuner for an electric guitar. The device is held up close to one of the cylinders and gets an RPM reading.

For NH, they want 2 cylinder bikes to run your RPM's up to 2800. If you have a 3 or 4 cylinder, the RPMs are to 3400 I believe.

In NH, 106 is legal. As Gary said, my bike's exhaust registered a 109.

All they did was give me an informational guide and thanked me for checking my bike with them. They suggested I let my Yamaha mechanic know about it and maybe some adjustment could be made to the engine. Otherwise, they said I could contact Vance & Hines and let them know and hope they would send me some extra packing for the baffle.

Nice to see police officers protecting the public from these outlaw bikers.Once this menace is eradicated then law enforcement will be able to focus on lesser problems such as gang violence, drugs, property theft, muggins and murder.

It didn't bother me in the least.

I've seen so many members in here, including myself, who have posted how much it irritates them to have a super loud Harley blowing their ears off on the roads. How else would that problem be solved if cops like these were doing these checkpoints?

                Dont worry, more is coming

Gents, how far away did they check the sound level? Were they right at the end of the pipe of several feet away?

Here where I live in Kenner, La (near New Orleans) we have a municipal noise ordinance that states there can be no sound produced from your vehicle that can be heard with the human ear from a distance of 12 feet away. And this is not just between the sleeping hours of 11:00pm and 6:00 am, its 24 hours a day. Now the ordinance is aimed at all the people that have loud sound systems in their cars but in reality every vehicle on the road will fail. My stock 2006 F-150 pick-up fails just sitting in the driveway at idle. Naturally, it is impossible for Kenner to enforce this but.......

I am afraid that alot more of this type of stuff is coming in the future unless we get vocal.

When I was a kid in Southern CA, my city passed an ordinance that said the noise could not be heard from more than 100 feet away. It was aimed at the sound systems too. Of course, we also had signs along the main drag in town that said you couldn't pass the same point more than once in a 30-minute time period. This one was aimed at the fact that they had an unofficial "cruising" night every Sunday, and the crowd had started to get problematic. Lowriders were the big thing in my area, along with the hydraulic lift systems and loud sound systems. Bikes were not really an issue there, for some reason...

It's still that way to a certain extent, Bug ...

As recently as last summer, the cops would occasionally park on the Orange County side of the Ortega Hwy and systematically turn the Hogleys right around back to Riverside cty, saying that the loud pipes weren't welcome any longer in Orange county. In Temecula I have seen them walk the street in front of the biker bar looking for non stock pipes and ticketing the bikes not in compliance. Why are these extra loud pipes even necessary, I wonder.

Because too many people believe the saying that "loud pipes save lives". That and the fact that the bikers who have them like to be rebels and enjoy turning heads through a neighborhood because they are so loud they rattle windows. Even the sport bikes do it here. I live a good mile from the freeway, but there are times when I can hear a crotch rocket zipping down the freeway because of their high-pitched loud pipes. I can't even hear tractor-trailers, but I can hear the bikes - something wrong with that if you ask me.

I truly think it is to compensate for a smallish body part.

Just so no one thinks I got my pipes because I wanted loud ones, I'll show the before and after photos, stock to present pipes. I simply liked the looks of the Vance and Hines and didn't like the stock pipes...too bulky in my opinion.

The guys at the Yamaha shop where I bought the bike told me they would be "just a little louder".

One discussion I had with the NH troopers was about my 1980 XS1100SG. I asked, "How the heck am I suppose to put pipes on an old bike like that if from what you are telling me, any aftermarket pipe is illegal? Am I suppose to put the rusted and dented original pipes back on just to be legal?"

Unfortunately, he didn't have much of an answer for that other than to say once again, if they aren't loud and you aren't out there reving the crap out of them, the cops aren't going to bother you.

I still wonder after reading one of the above posts about the local cops writing tickets for the bikes with aftermarket pipes. Sounds pretty stupid to me unless they are insanely loud.
