So, if something happened that caused an inspection after I install this engine, it would force another trip to the CHP (not really a major issue, just a pain), but if I get the stamps and stamp my VIN into the proper area which is currently blank, then no questions would be asked. That said, if I then sold my original cases to someone, and they used them in CA, there COULD be problems down the road. It's a good thing I intend to rebuild the original and keep it as a hot spare.Cy

Missouri
Sounds like NY is worse than Missouri because in addition to all the things you mentioned, (extensive inspection) you also must show proof of insurance to obtain a plate which must be immediately surrendered should your insurance be cancelled...... I looked at the pink slip for the Pathfinder and I see seperate places for the VIN and engine numbers. My spare engine that was from a low mileage Special has the numbers removed with a chissel and a California tag with California assigned numbers.....You can't stay young forever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life...
'78E "Pathfinder" Show bike...
Lovingly restored by Dave Delzell
Drilled airbox
Tkat fork brace
Hardly mufflers
late model carbs
Newer style fuses
Oil pressure guage
Custom security system
Stainless braid brake lines
