    You shouldve rolled.
I've always said that I would if this ever happened, but with all the little ball bearings, I got to about my shoulder blade and quit rolling.. just skidded. I was headed for a curb backwards, thinking.. man this is going to hurt. When I hit it, it was simply a bump and I laid there thinking, "Hmmm.. that wasn't bad at all!" lol.

I went over the handlebars years ago, and had planned on tucking and rolling then also. Same scenario... gravel on concrete turning into a parking lot. I didn't go down from the gravel, but it got me lined up with a parking curb at 30-35 mph. With all my dirt biking experience, I was simply going to bunny hop the curb... . I pulled up at just the right time... and only succeded in extending the forks. That critical step of getting at least the front wheel off the ground escaped me. So.. thought I... I'll tuck and roll. The best laid plans don't always work though..(Much like the bunny hop plans) and as I hit helmet-less and face first onto the concrete... my cool tuck and roll probably resembled more like the limp rag doll flop. Broken facial bones, lots of road rash, and some strange barbeque smells from the bike laying down next to me and spooning it's hot pipes against my arm. Luckily, none of this hurt.. lol. I remember going over the windshield.. and I remember hearing voices in a fog and feeling a towel on my face before I could actually see.

I can be running at full speed... I play fastpitch and play outfield.. dive for a ball, tuck and roll, and pop back up for the throw. This move has so far escaped me from a bike dismount. Hopefully I won't get enough practice to perfect this one..

Thanks for the well wishes, all.

When i rode trail bikes the slower i was going the harder i would always fall down and my ribs were the ones that usually suffered, the faster i went i was more likely to skid, i thought you'd remember that post about skidding and rolling and might give you a chuckle.

Your form going down was impeccable. It was a fluid demonstration of gravity and physics. Actually I think you were on your feet before the bike the bike quit moving. The look on you face was one of "did anyone see that"? Yes, unfortunatly we did see it. Whilst you put on good show that it didn't hurt much, we knew better. I bet the breeze blowing thru it on the ride back was to say the least, uncomfortable. As for the shirt, just cut the sleeves off and "git-er-done"!

Silly question here, but do you all have gremlin bells on your bikes?

Nope... and I ride under ladders, breaking the mirror on the ground as I try to run over the black cats crossing my path. I then light three buddy's cigarettes as I bend to pick up the tails-up penny and hand a buddy back his pocket knife closed even though he handed it to me empty. I always open my umbrellas indoors to make sure they will work when I get in the rain.

The way I ride, crashing once every 18 years or so.. I'll risk having some new clothes on every once in a while without subjecting my bike to the Harley wanna-be superstitions that makes them hope beyond hope that my bike won't shake itself apart before arriving at my destination.

The long version of saying... I'm not a very superstitious person.. lol. . I crashed because of gravel.. not a new shirt or lack of a gremlin bell.

Thanks for the giggle Tod, can't say as I blame you on that one. That said though I know people who ride hondas, bmws, goldwings, and all others that have gremlin bells. *shrug* to each his own

Tuck and Roll, it could save you

I only had one real crash so far....knocking on all wood in close proximity!!!

A cage stopped instantly in front of me for a local chili place (Skyline) and I was on a CB750 Custom with full fairing that did nto want to stop that quick. Threw me over the handle bars and over the car and next to the car into the next lane of traffic. Fortunately they could stop, and I recall beign int he air thinking hmmm...my helmet is on the helmet lock, I'm coming down head first, this aint gonna be pretty. So I wrapped my hands and arms over my head, tucked into a ball, and landed on my right elbow. Rolled, stopped, stood up and walked back and picked up the bike. Later I realized my left knee caught the windshield and was sliced open for ten stitches, and my right elbow was fractured. All thing considered, I'd say the tuck and rolled saved my azz, and head!

Picture a hillbilly light blue Chevy station wagon. Tobacco stain down the door. Parked across the street from a liquor store. Golden retriever sitting and watching owner of car come out liquor store door. Dog launches out the open driver window, landing on the street at the exact time my city rider moped passes that same spot at 25 mph. Bike tries to run over dog, gaining about 8-10 inches in height off asphalt. Bike knocks dog out of bikes path but also turns front wheel to full left lock. I know I am going over and I am sure I am going to leave my onions on the left handgrip on the way by. When the tire hit I jumped in the only direction I had any momentum. Just like a platform dive and tucked as I cleared the bars. Hit first on my shoulders and from there on down. One small scrape on left elbow and a big a$$ bruise on my left butt cheek from landing on my work keys. One lady that stopped said the dive looked great but she thought I was a goner. Dog fine. Front wheel was folded like a potato chip.

Moral : Bruised pride and skined hide heals pretty fast when we realize how lucky we can be out there on the road.

                        I hate falling down

I'm glad your walking and talking, and I know the road rash is painful. Heal quickly. The more I hear about crashes, the more diligent I become in wearing profective gear. My new helmet should arrive this week, and I alway wear by Joe Rocket jacket and gloves.

Please be careful, stay healthy, and may God protect. See ya in Talahina come October. Stan
