Carb cleaning video I found interesting. Does anyone see anything he is doing that you like or dislike?

It looks like he will be cleaning them a couple more times. That was some half-assed work. He never addressed the pilot jet, screw or system. He never cleaned the choke circuit. He didn't remove the float and float needle. He didn't check/set the float height, nor did he even clean the bottom of the bowl. He shoudn't have used that steel pick to probe the orifice that feeds the choke circuit, he should have used a thin strand of copper, or other soft metal, wire to poke into those holes.
I hope the guy in the video isn't a member, and if he is, sorry dude, but you need to be more thorough when you clean these carbs.

I didn't watch all of the clips, but like John said, not the best techniques!

I gotta agree with John. That is the quick and dirty side of the road carb cleaning if you ask me.

Never removed the pilot jet or pilot air jet which is the most common circuit to cause trouble. Did not remove and clean or replace the float valve and seat, the most common area to cause trouble and or fires from leaking float seats. All of the removed parts should have been soaked in cleaner, he barely cleaned that emulsion tube which was dirty as crap to my eyes. Not to mention the bowl bottom. Like John said, if that is a member, do not take offense, just my opinion.

silicone on the diaphragm

What do you think of his use of silicone on the diaphragm to keep it from "drying out" as he put it? I guess that diaphragms shrink after they are removed from the carb?

The diaphrams will shrink if left out in the heat over a couple days.

I heard him say he already had the carbs apart. With how he held the carbs up removing the screws, I'd be a bit leary of stipping one or one coming out and running across the floor to hide . Same thing with the jet and washer.

You'd think he'd remove the float valve/seat and clean it if not replace them. I'm sure his float heights were affected after all that cleaning with the airgun.

Ahh well, practice makes perfect! He'll have them apart again to clean that pilot circuit. I bet he gets good and R&R the carbs any way .

Ya know, over the years of motorcycle ownership, Wildkat has become very proficiant with cleaning/setting up carbs. She only has to clean them once, because she knows what circuits to clean, how to clean them, and how to check that they are truly clean.
She could show this guy a thing or ten!
The way the carbs were spaced on the mounting rack makes me think they are from an XS 650? Is that the case?

I also was not that impressed. His work space was a mess for a carb cleaning job nd as pointed out by others he really didn't clean them. As for carb diaphragms shrinking, Yes they will if you just leave them sitting on the bench. I have however, reused them as much as a year later but they were stored in zip lock bags after being cleaning with rubber renewer. They were only slightly smaller then original and fit easy enough.

John, perhaps you should grab the video camera and have Wildkat go over a proper carb cleaning. I would probably be very benificial to have this procedure well documented. I am sure that it would help countless members both old and new.
