Know what you mean Ray. I tell my students that I teach TKD to, none of them were born knowing how to write the alphabet, but all of them can write the letter A without thinking about it now. By the time they reach black belt, most of the basic self defense techniques will be the same.

Since I get the impression you were "in country" as they say, I am sure it had to be twice as instictive to keep your but alive!

For me, it was having two older brothers that made it instinctive That and eight years of training will do alot. I think the dude that hit Jim was VERY lucky, and Jim was VERY restrained.

No, I was NOT in country, but a lot of my squad WAS. I learned from them, and my "buddy" who was a second den....

Warning, the following is not PC!

Out in Western Kansas, with the beef packing industry exploding, there has been a tremendous influx of Asian and Latin immigrants. Both legal and otherwise.

The standard joke is: What happens when these two cultures mingle.
Answer: You get a car thief who can't drive.

Not my joke, just reporting the facts.

LOL. With us it's Asians and Samoans, end result is the same.

Around here it's Asians and Tongan's. That and the Mexican's that can't drive, but most of those are because they are never sober enough (at least in my niegborhood.)

Jim...as you know I already emailed you about this but wanted to publicly state that "new immigrant" is a total @$$hole...it just goes to show you how little they value human life in that part of the world. And the nerve of him to be blaming you for his lack of judgement and owning up to his responsibilites...I hope Lori wasn't on the back with you...I too would have killed that p.o.s. I'm glad you did get a good piece of him...Its really no different here...these "new immigrants" have no concept of how to drive nor of their responsibilities or consideration to those with whom they share the road. Pls take care...and I hope o be back up your way real soon...I am looking forward to it...BTW again the pics of the progress is just awesome...I haven't seen the engine look that good since about 1983!!!!

This has nothing to do with a persons immigration status. I see people everyday who should not be allowed on public roadways.

This thread used to be interesting, but has taken a turn for the stereotypical and I will now be tuning out in favor of something less judgmental.

Jim, I'm glad you're OK and I can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing if I were in your position.

I do have to apoligize for the mexican part of my post. I'm having real trouble with nieghbors who are AFAICT illegals, but nobody can be bothered to even check. They had their power turned off 2 weeks ago and keep running a generator right outside my bedroom window, even though the cops have come out and told them that they can't run it, and that they can't live there without power. They just keep on going and nothing changes, and of course the city can't be bothered to actually enforce the zoning law.

As for the others, it's just observation, but there do seem to be a lot of "new immigrants" who don't know anything about driving, most likely because they never got to learn how where they came from.

I worked law enforcement (USCG and US Customs) on the water for 20 yrs in South Florida. Often times they were in the same boat.

                            We are different culturally

I would like to add that most motorcyclists live and let live. But we all learn from what we see. If we see a behavior consistantly repeated within a culture we would be foolish to not be wary of that culture in similar situations.
Canadians in particular are politically correct and very tolerant of other cultures, in fact cultural diversity is supported and encouraged. On the other hand, some latitude must be allowed for the frustrations of people who are victimized by these culturally based behaviors.
There are first generation cultures (Philippinos)who have done very well here because of a respectful and hard working attitude.
I can't imagine the trouble Jim would have been in if he were in Pakistan and ran into the back of a motorcycle.
Bottom line if you want respect you must give respect. We all know that.
No cultural issues would have come out of this if the person who ran into Jim had expressed some simple human concern.
We did not create the cultural behavioral consistancies, we just noticed them. In time, I'm sure all will adjust just as previous immigrant generations have.

Thx dbeardslee. We've all been in the postion of cringing when hearing brakes lock up behind us. That might make all this a little more personal. Jim is okay, so I'm sure he would prefer to put the incident behind him, and so shall I.
It was great to see everyone supporting a XS11 brother. Thx. Rick
