  • hmmm????

ok, so my 1100 has been flawless for 2 years when i picked it up on the side of a barn for 300 bucks. Actually started right up without even having to do the carbs. but it only sat a little over a year.
since then, shes started up each and everytime right off the bat, even in the dead of winter below zero.
Last night i started it up and put her on choke when i got a call and had to step away from the bike, after a minute it stopped the high idle and dropped down to regular idle, i thought perhaps it was the computer telling it it's warmed up or something, thought this had happened before, but seldome am I ever not on the bike to take it out of choke myself ya know. Not sure if any of this sounds right or not, do we have anything that does that? is that suppose to happen, i could of swore that did that last year too at some point.

I ask, because i'm also going through a nasty divorce right now, and i've been away during the days remodeling my new place, Shes a bitch to say the least and i wouldnt put much past her. Tonight when i got home I was very excited to go riding as we got our first 80 degree day up here in NY, but to my avail, my bike wont start??? Last night when it had dropped down to idle, i turned it off as something else came up and didnt go out riding.
Now today i get nothing, it would put like it was firing on a single cylinder, cleaned all the plugs, ran for a second, then nothing again.

I'm convincing myself the bitch put sugar in my tank, as i always leave the key in the ignition anyways. But perhaps not as it did drop from high idle choke last night to regular idle by itself.

so.... is there anything like a computer or anything that would of takin it out of choke, or did something happen last night and i'm just realizing it today.....

also, a friend made a note that due to my no exhaust on one side, and improper backpressure, i could of bent a valve??? does that make any sense, rode all last season like that with no issues...

    thanks.

I really doubt sugar would have made it passed the screens in the tank. Contrary to popular belief, sugar mostly just gums up filters. Now if you really want to screw up an engine, use honey. It makes it through the fuel system and then crystallizes in the heat and scores cylinders. That is if the stuff doesn't plug every orifice in the bike first, and it is hell on fuel injectors, but we don't have to worry about that.

As far as the computer telling your bike to come off high idle, eh, well, er....no. These bikes don't have a computer. Barely one if you count the TCI as being more intelligent than an ignition module. Leaving the bike on high idle choke for extended periods may well have caused an overheat, which would have scored cylinders, and busted rings and such attributing to the "automatic" slow down.

I would say that a compression test is in order.

Valves don't bend from lack of back pressure. Four stroke engines are not really that finicky about back pressure, and even an open header should run OK. Valves bend from other things ramming into them. Things like pistons and other valves. This is caused by the cams not being in time or wrapping well above redline, in which case the valves float and hit the pistons.

once again, a compression test is in order.

Hope you get it running. As for the divorce, demonstrated malice is generally a free ride for the other party, at least around here. Just play the nice guy who is being abused and you'll be ok. Well, almost. Divorce sucks big time. I would never want to experience another.

Don't worry about it. I have been an a brutal divorce, and understand the angst.

It was probably HER that kinked the fuel line anyway.

Divorce seems to affecet everything around us; doesn't it? My inlaws are going through a divorce right now and only one of them seems to understand that. My mother-in-law thinks that everything is about her and is if something goes wrong(even a motorcycle) it must be her fault.

I don't mean to hijack the thread.

I hope the bike keeps running well.
Ride safe. And best wishes to you through your rough times.

At least its running again! I had a similar problem with an older bike. The vent holes in the gas cap got clogged and the bike would run about two miles down the road and die, however it was a moped so it took a little longer to run out of gas. That's the most embarrassing part, a moped! Anyway I was relieved when it was it was a simple fix, and I'm glad to hear yours wasn't a major fix. At least yours is a real bike!

Dropping idle could be the plugs getting a bit fouled from over rich mixture when you leave it on choke past when it needs it. Or are you saying you come back out and the choke has physically moved?

Isn't it just plain sad how you can love someone so much and they love you back the same, then a while later, you can't stand the sight of each other? Been there, done that....three freakin times.

Anyway, just a suggesting if you really suspect she is doing something to your bike. Just hide it at a friend's house. I did that with the German Shepherd we had. The beeeeaaaatch took off with a boyfriend, took our Jack Russell which was great for me, but left the Shepherd behind saying she'd get him later.

"My AZZZZ!" I hid him at one of my neighbors and now five years later, he's here laying near my feet as I type this. My best buddy for sure!

Good luck with everything, I know your stress levels must be sky high right now.

I went through a nasty one about 20 years ago, and for many moons afterwards, if anything bad happened in my life I just assumed it was her doing. I feel for you, brother. There's just nothing better than that day when they hand you your final decree. OK, the day the restraining order took affect was pretty good too .
