I just noticed DGXSER's post about the bike having Special 'trees and as close as I can see from the photo, he's right.
Putting Standard fork tubes & lowers into Special 'trees will increase the steering trail by ~40% and this will make the bike real heavy to steer.
(Unless the bike's frame has had it's frame rake angle decreased by a frontal collision, then increasing the trail will restore some stability.)
When you get the bike running, let us know how it handles, eh?

If you have NOT figured the coils out yet, try replacing them. I got a pair from http://www.mikesxs.net/products-27.html#products, and they work VERY well. It was about $85 for two coils, and new plug wires. I can now REPLACE just the wires when I need to. Big thing about mikesxs, he sells ONLY XS650 PARTS! You DO NOT tell him what you are going to use the parts for, just order two coils, Part #17-6803 $34.00 each, and two sets of wires, Part #23-2906 at $7.00 per set(pair).
It may seem like a lot of money, but it's an EASY fix, and it will give you a better spark. John and Kat are two great members of the board, and can probably help with some of the details, as they are a "local" pm.

Hey Welcome! As you can see our bikes are a little diverse, but our commitment to this fine old design is complete! Since you appear to have a mix, please bear with - we all care!

i've already got parts on the way to try and fix the old ones, so i'm going to have a go at the first. if i screw that up (entirely likely) i'll get new ones. thanks for the link, i had no idea you could still get 'em, i thought no one made new ones.
