If you have NOT figured the coils out yet, try replacing them. I got a pair from http://www.mikesxs.net/products-27.html#products, and they work VERY well. It was about $85 for two coils, and new plug wires. I can now REPLACE just the wires when I need to. Big thing about mikesxs, he sells ONLY XS650 PARTS! You DO NOT tell him what you are going to use the parts for, just order two coils, Part #17-6803 $34.00 each, and two sets of wires, Part #23-2906 at $7.00 per set(pair).
It may seem like a lot of money, but it's an EASY fix, and it will give you a better spark. John and Kat are two great members of the board, and can probably help with some of the details, as they are a "local" pm.Ray Matteis

i've already got parts on the way to try and fix the old ones, so i'm going to have a go at the first. if i screw that up (entirely likely) i'll get new ones. thanks for the link, i had no idea you could still get 'em, i thought no one made new ones.--
