Howdy, all. I'm from DFW, TX and the new owner of a '79 XS11 Special (I think). Sort of inherited it from a brother-in-law and am fixing it up. Pix are attached. I'm sure I'll have tons of questions as I go about getting it running again, but I just wanted to introduce myself first.

WooHoo!
About time we got another DFW XSive around here!
Well... you DO have a Special tank.. but you have a standard rear cowl and standard instrument cluster and mirrors... Don't have much time to look really close at it at the moment though...
At any rate... glad to have you on board!
John and I are in Hurst...
Going back and actually READING the response before mine...
Yeah... what he said...

Definitely a combo bike. Standard forks, standard guages, special headlight and signals up front, standard signals in back. Looks like special trees or at least bar clamps. Did the standard have a slotted rear brake disc? did either in 79? The seat it is non stock.
Overall a nice looking bike. Love the "ghost" flames. got me thinking of a late winter project for mine.Last edited by DGXSER; 02-07-2009, 10:26 PM.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

So it sounds like it's a for-sure frankenbike, which is cool. Hoping to have the thing running soon, it was stored for a year before I got it, thankfully without gas or oil and in a very dry place, so the engine is clean.
Seems a lot of the rubber seals and shock absorbers have given in to dry rot. I replaced the front tire this weekend with a new Dunlop, have also put a new battery, plugs, oil, filter, etc. in. Still won't start, so I'm going to go over the ignition coils with a multimeter this week when i get some time. it may just be the wires, they are pretty cracked and falling apart.
Read thru the faq and if the coils meter out ok, it sounds like I need to start checking the ignition control module on the rear fender?Last edited by jockeys; 02-09-2009, 03:18 PM.--

also not 100% sure about my fuel petcocks, they seem to freeflow when in the reserve position, I'm not sure if they are supposed to do that or not. The take-apart manual said they needed vacuum to work in primary, but nothing about reserve.--

Hi Jock and welcome,
A hybrid for sure. But is it a Special trying to be a Standard or vice-versa?
From the pics,
Standard forks, gauges, rear signals & plastic bumstop with Special gas tank, headlamp & front signals.
Seat is aftermarket. Grabrail & lower tripletree chrome trimpiece are missing. Slotted brake disk on rear wheel is from a later bike.
Check if the engine & frame serial numbers are the same to see if the engine is a transplant.
Check the rear wheel diameter (16" = Special; 17" = Standard)Fred Hill, S'toon
