Kids love motorcycles and I don't think taking them along on a ride is a problem, if they are old enough to understand what is going on and what will happen if they get off a moving motorcycle. That said, I've always based my decision on who to take along on the kid in question, age is a big factor, no one under 9 or 10 yrs. old, their maturity and willingness to listen to and follow instructions, and sit still. You must also supply the proper riding gear and in most states you will need adjustable foot pegs that will fit them. Some friends and I have taken one of our riding buddys sons with us on day trips of over 300 miles and we all look on those trips as some of our best.

My personal requirement for my daughter was that she be able to reach both footpegs while sitting ont he back seat. She achieved that goal this fall (she is now 8). I have not taken her on any long trips and probably won't for some time. Just slow speed around the neighborhood.

My 10 y/o loves to ride,

I can hardly leave the house w/out my 10 y/o asking me to take him. Most of the times I do and he loves going on extended rides. He particularly likes for me to pick him up from school on the bike because he gets to show off in front of his school buddies. It never fails, he always asks me to gun it a little when we leave.
My 17 y/o would be caught dead riding on what he calls the "biatch" seat.

That points out how the coolness factor changes once the kid reaches an age where he could legally drive one himself. It's no longer cool to sit in the same seat where he wishes a girl was riding behind him.

My 5 year old is very excited about me taking him out this spring. We won't be going for very long rides just yet as he isn't yet able to quite put his feet on the foot pegs but he's very close. I figure just around the neighborhood or around grandma's area. Probably no longer than 10-15 minute rides at a time and nothing over 30 mph. No risks with the boy onboard.
If you don't own a fire extinguisher, do me a personal favor and go purchase one... immediately.

I agree with all who say pillion with feet on the pegs.

I'd also caution against strpping the child to yourself. Should you come off the bike and roll, an adult body rolling over a child can be devastating.

A driveway ride on the tank or front of the seat is probably all I'd consider at this point.

                  TC,

Don't ride with a child that small. It can't be made safe. You know how much I enjoy riding with my kids. My two youngest like to ride, but they didn't get on until their head could fill a helmet and their feet rest firmly on the pegs.

You remember my daughter, Kendall at XS East 2004? She was only 10 years old and rode nearly 2000 miles! Their time comes quickly.

My Brother used to put his 4 year old girl on the seat in front and his 7 year old boy on the back, One day a state trooper stopped him and gave him a ticket, He said that they had to have foot pegs that they could reach. He mounted a set in front and a set up hi in the back found the trooper and asked if that would work and he said yes it would. My 8 year old rides with me every chance he gets. I ride with the Patroit Gaurd here in Minnesota and he is with me on every ride that he is not in school. As was posted earlier a set of clamp on hiway pegs fits nicly on the upright frame tube behind the air box and can be moved up and down as they grow. As far as age goes that I am not sure about but the kid has been riding with me when we had State and locale cops for escourts and had no problems.

                          Are you there???

That's the question I have to ask my niece when's she rides with me which she has been doing since about 9 or so for she sits back and doesn't like to hold on to me my little one has been riding with me since she was nine or so and like her mother can fall asleep back there and still hold on just fine ( her mother did it one year on the way back from Sturgis and freaked me out when I'm having conversation and after while kept getting no response (that never happens with women)). As long as they are aware of rules and don't shift around unexpectedly they are usually best riders in my opinion, at least alot better than me one time I got on back in last 20 years and that was to help out friend so all depends on child
