Can anyone tell me how to bypass a knock sensor on a 98 Chey truck with a 350 motor? Can you just unplug it or does it have to be grounded? It is just a one wire plug. I don't think a new one would help, because i think i have some piston slap when it is cold. The truck has about 280,000 miles on it but still runs great.
    Thanks Tom

    Look here:

If you register you can search for that knock sensor. A bunch came up for the Silverado when I did.

On the older systems with ESC you could unplug them, but I think the later stuff used a bias voltage on the wire so you may get a check engine light when disconnected. Either way, the ecm will ignore the signal and revert to base timing. If you get an improvement in performance, you'll know that is the problem.

Honestly, I have never seen a knock sensor that worked well enough to do what they say it should do. The test procedure is to tap the engine block near the KS and watch for timing retard. Most of the time they just don't work. A co worker in a shop I worked at kept hitting it harder and harder, finally breaking the coolant jacket. Boy was the boss happy.

Just be ready for the Knock Sensor to not be your problem, although it definitely could be.

If the knock sensor isn't working, would it help to install a doorbell instead?

I would still need the wiring diagram for the doorbell, unless you want to come up and wire it up for me. How does your xs get around in that 6 to 8 inches of snow you got.

To the OP, FYI, if you can afford a new truck, Ford is darn near giving them away.

Three weeks ago, I bought this '08 F-150 with the Triton 5.4, 4x4, cloth seats, back up sensors/alarm if you get too close to something, power windows/locks for $22,000.

I traded in a Dodge Ram after nearly wiping out in snow and ice. I bought the Ram in St. Pete, FL and figured 2 wheel drive would be fine.....then I moved back to NH and realize it wasn't.

Yeah, this snow SUCKS!! I've been riding up until it hit last weekend, and all this week I have had to take the cage to work. Luckily, the schools were closed for 2 days this week, so SWMBO didn't need the car (she's a teacher). The temps are supposed to get up to 50 tomorrow, and highs in the 40s all next week, so hopefully I will be able to ride again next week, once the snow melts a bit more.
