  • G'day, Just Bought an XS1100 to Restore

    G'day,

Yes I'm an Aussie and I just bought an '81 XS1100 to have a go at restoring.

Going by this forum, I will be coming online to glean the knowledge bank for information.

Got her on ebay and wont have the bike in my possesian for a couple of days and will post other pics when I get it on my blogg website, just to throw a curve ball into the rally adventures. Here's a shot from the ebay listing. I payed Aus$745. 63,500 Km, one owner, never dropped. Has some surface rust from sitting for 8 years and hasn't been started for years, but still turns over.

Welcome! Looks like a nice find there! Don't hesitate to ask questions here, as there are tons of answers to be given - not that you will want all of them

Plenty of good folks here, and I know there are several Aussie regulars here as well.

Since it's been sitting so long, you'll definitely need to clean the carbs out, so start with some searches on this site for tips on that process. If you need the manual, I have posted the OEM and Clymer's versions as free downloads here on my website.

We look forward to more pictures!

Tarzan, the bloke who I bought her from says, it is an XS 1100R Midnight Special.

The pipe is 4 into 1 TRANZAC, they sound great, nice and loud. Had one on my old GPZ 600r.

Seat looks good! You lucked out. Any luck getting the carbs to fire after taking that rusty fuel out?

No mate, I'm going to clean the entire fuel systemout first. Taking the plugs out they were soaked in the filthy crap. The previous owner just put a litre in and hope for the best. He didn't know he would be washing all the surface rust off inside the tank. Here's the top and bottom of the tank.

The left side looks as goodas the right, just has some surface spot rusting.

                  You'll have to excuse my non tech talk here as I really am new at this, but I just got the carbs off and;

none of the 4 circular clamps to the carbs from engine side were firmly tightened.

3 of the 4 bolts to the inside cylinders holding the rubber intake were missing and the fourth was half way out.

Would this not have caused air in resulting is misfiring and backfires???

I think the last person to work on carbs, got distracted, to be polite.

I've emailed the bloke I got her from and will edit this with his reply.

Right now I got some cleaning to do and three bolts to track down...

Yes, all of those loose bits could have been causing some significant leaks, lots of lean running and backfiring.

                      Hi, nice looking bike..

You have the XS1100RH model, almost identical (99.9%) to the European Sport model. There is a couple of Aussie members on the UK site who have a few of these bikes and I'm sure you will be able to squeeze a manual out of the club which covers your bike.

The seat cover has been replaced at some time as there is no pattern on the top of it, that's why it is good nick.

You were also lucky to get the nose fairing with the bike. In most cases these have been taken off and lost over time and it is very difficult to find a replacement with all the pieces intact.

You can browse around the UK site HERE if you need any help with your model of bike.

                      Shappers,

                        Another Pete!

                        G'day Peter.

petejw lives in Blacktown and has the same bike as you. He helped me re build my engine and is a mechanic by trade so you might do well to drop him a line.

I am a mechanical spastic however.

                        Welcome to the forum.

Thanks Fellas, an update on my information of the sitting period.

The bike has only sat for 4 years rather than over 8. I sincerely hope tha mans memory improves, nobody can afford to lose that many years...it turns out she was running great the last time he road her and the next time he tried to start her, she simply wouldn't fire...so he just left her sitting at his folks...
