I put one on my SG. It was the tiny rare earth one, weighs hardly anything, yet very strong. It worked almost everywhere, but there was one light near my house that was unimpressed by it. I have no experience with the larger one made of a magnetized piece of iron. Those weigh several pounds.
Get a magnet out of an old speaker, larger the better. Stick it to the bottom of your bike and test the concept. If it works, then get a rare earth type from any scientific warehouse and put it on. Might save you a few bucks.

      Hey Axel

Here is a link that explains why you need them and how they work. However, there are only a few traffic lights with Induction detectors in the Ottawa area.

They remodeled an intersection near me and I have waited there many a time . Some newer trafic lights seem to change if I am in the right place but not this one . I have had to run the red to continue on slow nights when no-one came from the other direction ( any given night here )

I had one on my E for several years. It seemed to work, changing lights to green that I previously had to wait for a cage to change for me.
              Someone stole it.
Now I wait until the lights cycle and if they don't change for me I go anyway (when it's clear and safe to do so). I've only been pulled over once for this. No ticket after explaination. Also had to educate the officer that the square in the road was a buried wire with an induston field that is triggered by the mass of metal of an automobile (or a strong magnet), not a scale that is triggered by weight.

Many of the intersections in my area are moving to the video detection type of traffic units and abandoning the induction loops. The company I work for installs them.

If you see cameras facing all 4 directions at an intersection, its using it.

Larger magnets can be had at http://www.supermagnetman.net. One of the 1/2 cubes would probably set off the induction loops in multiple lanes.

I put one on my bike a couple of years ago and can't see where it made much of a difference, but if you want to try one go with a larger one made for a car. You can get them from J.C. Whitney.

There's several states that are changing the laws to allow a motorcycle to proceed on red after a cycle of lights.

If you want just a cheap magnet, Harbor Freight has a lot of magnets for a few bucks. Here is a 25 lbs. magnetic pull one for $3. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=96651
I took a magnet out of a 1992 Ford Ranger factory speaker, very powerful and about the size of 3 quarters stacked. Dropped it in an elevator shaft about 10 stories then it stuck to the 2nd floor doors holding them open! Never tried putting a magnet on the bike though, kind of afraid of all the metal I'll pickup and drag down the street. There is a crappy street light that won't change leaving my neighborhood, won't run it because the courthouse is right across the street and the cops are bad, so I get off the bike and hit the crosswalk button a few times.

Mount that magnet on a bracket out front of the front tire. Avoid flat tires that way.

I think out in Kalifornia you need to wait for two cycles before you can scoot on through a motorcyle ignorant red light.

                              Ceepist magnet yet.

Since almost all of us gathered here are also members of the Busted Knuckle Club, you can do like I did. I looked on craigslist.org in the free section and found someone giving away an old microwave. After taking the main cover off, look for the magnitron. Inside it are two very powerful magnets. they look like flat donuts. Use them to trip your Red lites. And it is all free!
