Ditto. I used to work for McAfee and I use AVG on all our computers and most of my consulting clients use it too.

I work in IT professionally, and personally don't see a need for any AV software at all. As long as you don't visit nasty websites and don't open attachments in Spam e-mails, you won't "catch" anything. The problem is that people decide to visit the websites that support gambling, warez, and porn, and don't realize that just visiting these sites can put your PC at risk.

I never have a problem with viruses, but if I ever run across spyware at all, I do the free Housecall scan from Trendmicro.

I was searching for wiring diagram when I hit a malicious web site. I beg to differ, it's only a matter of time that if you're browsing for info that you will hit a bad site.

Have a friend who got into different operating systems and picked up on Linux and said that is one of the perks. No one bothers to work up a viruses for Linux. Well, never say never.

Type in AVG in you search engine (google). you can use free.avg
I've use it on my computers. I will catch some thing that symantec doesn't. I guess it just depends on who did thier update first.

I agree. I haven't ran antivirus software on my personal PC since the 90's. Just a weekly check at the Trendmicro or Kapersky free scanners. Dedicated scanners can help, but I can't stand the performance hit they bring with them.

I have a mind meld with my computer If it gets something it doesn't like, I know it pretty quickly. I've caught spy/adware a time or two back when it was bundled with damn near all freeware, but nothing else. Now that I use open source programs nearly exclusively, I never have that problem anymore.

The vast majority of malicious web pages are using exploits that have already been fixed. The best defense of all against them is making sure your Windows is updated frequently. Using Firefox (esp. with a good adblocker plugin) helps a whole lot too. IE is a gaping wound in your computer.
