    Thx, TC ..

Makes sense, I have wondered about that one. ... I have the metal float needles. It must take quite a while for the fuel pressure to finally defeat them though. Seems like if i leave 'em on overnight, even on the centerstand, morning; there's a pool.

why didn't Yamaha put vacuum petcocks in there?

      Hi Stereomind,
vacuum taps are a sop to the feeble-minded. If you can't remember to turn the gas off after a run you are too dim to be riding.

Re: why didn't Yamaha put vacuum petcocks in there?

You're right, fredintoon. I'm obviously too stupid to ride. So I'll sell my 2 25+ year old bikes that I restored myself from near-salvage conditions, and get a big SUV or something. Maybe then I can text while I drive, too.

On a side note, both of my bikes have vacuum petcocks FROM THE FACTORY, which have been diligently rebuilt and checked for leaks. So you're suggesting that I trash them and maybe carve my tank so I can fit an on/off petcock on them? No thanks.

"the guilty flee where no man persueth"

          Hi Stereomind,
if you are too stupid to ride then so am I.
My XS650 which I have owned since new has vacuum taps. My XS11SG also now has vacuum taps because it's currently wearing a Standard gas tank that uses them. Thus I can ride without worrying about which way the gas taps are switched. Except for ON vs RES but the XS11 has a little red light to remind me to get gas. However, my BSA has manually operated taps and I find that yes, I can still cope with that.
BTW, if you are concerned that the continued use of vacuum taps will sap your brainpower you don't have to sell off your bikes and buy an SUV; vacuum taps can be easily swapped around to work like real ones:-

            if it ain't broke...

I don't see the point in converting a fully functional vac petcock. If it doesn't leak, and works as advertised, why bother?

I also (occasionally) ride a Honda FourTrax 300 ATV, which has a manual petcock. I never have a problem remembering to turn it on or off.

As far as brain cells are concerned, I still have both of mine

Yeah, me too but I must admit that at my age they don't fire as well as they used to.
OK, if your vacuum taps are working properly I'm all for leaving them alone but
if the vacuum thingies in the taps are acting up I'd look at that fix I mentioned and hey! Goodbye two more hoses.
