        Octopus ...

Geez .... My desire to keep things 'factory' was finally overtaken by the frustration of reattaching the tank and hoses each time after removing it. I've had to have the tank off ALOT. So I finally chucked it even though it works perfectly... if you do decide to chuck it however, be sure your fuel taps don't leak. Don't ask me how I know.

I'm glad I have your permission at least.... because I do. And will!!

It wasn't so much the nail polish though, as it was the high heels and fishnets. Not bad legs by the way.. if you'd just shave them a bit. This isn't France or Germany ya know...

The absolute best way to ensure that you don't have any problems with the octopus is to REMOVE IT AND NEVER, EVER LET IT GET NEAR YOUR BIKE AGAIN!!! If your floats and needles are working correctly, you don't even need to worry about remembering to turn your petcocks to the OFF position when you aren't riding...

                  KISS the octy goodbye

I have to admit that as my XS11SG had it's octy removed by one of it's dreaded POs I have no first-hand experience of the critter. But I have seen the drawing of how to hook it up. Not wanting to brag, but I had 45 years experience as a machine designer and the first thing you learn is the KISS principle. Anyone who uses nine hoses to connect two taps to two carb. inlet tees could never even have heard of it.

Thing is my Octy works ok...but when you look at that part of the bike you see hoses going around the pod filters and its unsightly...not to mention what a PITA in reconnecting it.Removing the carbs and working on them was easier and less aggrevating than reconnecting the Octy!
So according to what TC told me.I need to cap off the front port on the petcock on the right side and run the gas line with a filter from the rear port of the petcock to connect to carbs 1 and 2 on the left side of the carb bank...and the left side petcock is capped in the front and the rear is routed to carbs 3 and 4...sounds really easy

I got so frustrated with my fuel lines kinking right at the base of the petcock. There's just not a whole lot of room for them. So I bought some higher quality fuel lines, at least I was told they were higher qualitiy. They are blue and clear. Who knows....

Anyway, I had to rig them to go around the boots to the airbox. Looks like a freaking nest under there but you can't see much once the tank goes on. They all connect to the octopus. At least it solved my kinking problem. I just hope I didn't fix one problem while creating another....you know, like a major fire hazard.

I sure know this story well. Actually been through the fuel line colors and qualities too. Easiest to work with comes in 1 foot lenghts from MikesXS. Pretty sure it's close to factory .. it makes tight bends well. Black only

Once I get this motor dialed in, I may put the damn thing back on. I like the idea of automatic fuel shut-offs alot. Have forgotten a couple of times and contaminated the oil ...

I think I have seen here some pretty sharp XSers who say that the float needle and seat should hold the gas back anyway .... but I have not found that to be so .... I wonder if I still have float levels too high ?? Anyone know??

                            Hey Wiz,

I think the later styled Viton(rubber) tipped valves are more forgiving and seal better, vs. the older styled ALL METAL ones. The metal ones need to be an EXACT match to make and keep a good seal, whereas the viton ones have some compressibility to allow them to squish against the seat opening, and I think make a better seal, or at least have a better chance of making a tight seal even with slight irregularity or crud getting in the fuel!! I think this is also why Jessie/XS81Project came up with the Viton float valve conversion for the earlier bikes!

if only they moved the seam on the bottom of the gas tank like... 1/4 in. further in, you could scavenge some vacuum petcocks from a smaller Maxim or a seca... For that matter, why didn't Yamaha put vacuum petcocks in there? Would've been better looking and easier to deal with... but nooooo they had to put a weird ugly thing in there.
