    OTOH,
perhaps it was in H. Rider Haggard's "King Solomon's mines" that Ayesha was first mentioned in.

Re: "she who must bend over"

      Fred,
      She knows who She is!

Hehehehehe! (that's my evil little laugh)

However, SWMBO (She who must be obeyed) as a description of a domineering wife was popularized by John Mortimer's "Rumpole of the Bailey" novels and the TV shows which were made of them. But where did the thing originate? In H. Rider Haggard's 1890s adventure novel "She"
"She who must be obeyed" was the royal title of Ayesha, the blonde, beautiful & immortal queen of a mysterious African tribe.

Actually, the origin of SWMBO has come up before; its one of those recurring threads theat pop up every so often.

Personally, I liked the Rumpole of the Baily series...we used to get BBC on one of our cable channels, and watched it fairly often.

Also liked BBC News, much better than our US coverage of international events.

Anyway, Rumpole refered to his wife as SWMBO, a direct reference to Ayesha as fredintoon so correctly states.

Some guys think it shoucl read SWMO (she who must obey) but I've never hear of that going very far. Won't fly in my house!
