This, my friend, is an age old question. Greek philosophers were seen toiling over this question at the Parthenon. Romans were debating the highs and lows of each in the Flavian Colusseum. Buddha and Tao have pondered the question in peaceful solitude. The answer always eludes us.

Sure, ride next to a special, your sure to stop every 80-100 miles.

Pfft, I got 132 miles on my last tank of gas. On one trip I ran on vapors to 140 miles.

But still, I wouldn't mind a standard tank.

Does the standard gas tank bother anyone else?

            Hi Brasco,
(I'm far too polite to call you shortarse) I'm shrunk by age to 5'-7" and the edges on the Standard tank don't bother me any. Especially when I fly right by the gas stations I used to have to refill my Special tank at.

OK, here's a solution - if you're game... put a 1/2 inch wedge under your right peg, move the nuts and salami to the left slightly...good to go !!!
Alternately - 1/2" wedge left peg -nuts & salami right...

Well I don't know about the rest of you guys but it will take more than a 1/2 inch wedge to shift this guy's nuts and salami!

Well I got the special cause I wanted to set it up how I wanted it,not a factory set up but my own individual mindset as to what I wanted and I thought it looked better. Four gallon tank does suck a bit but I am willing to accept that. I have had this bike for 28 years and it has never let me down and is set up just how I like it. I am switching to a standard tank, but me and the special (couch-like) seat will never part ways.

I like the way the standards handle. The different CG and forks give it a nice ride. Well, the kind of ride I want anyway

I have a special...most folks here know that. It's stripped down and set up however I can afford to have it. GSX headlights, LED signals and tails, Special seat, highway pegs. I load it up with gear all the time and ride. Very comfortable for me at 6 feet tall. Think I may change out the bars for 14" drawbacks so I can sit back further. I also have the front end shake in turns but other than that its nimble as heck.

MFarrington has a special. We ride together very often. Other than the tank and his brandy-new pipes, not much difference in them. his feels lighter than mine but ride height and handling are about the same. In a fast run, he keeps right with me no problem. If I were to own a Special, it would be a Midnight. Other than that, Im Standard all the way. 1000 miles to GA from NY and I never got a numb butt or tired arms. I love my standard. Never part with it.

I have always been a round headlight kind of guy, but the Standard is really growing on me with the 2 tone paint indented tank and the square headlight. But I still don't like fairings!

I have one of each ...

on the road right now and one is my first Special. Don't know if it is because my initial Eleven back in '79 was a Standard or what ... ??? ... but I like the handling of my Standard better and some other things too but especially the way it handles.

I have put a fairing and bags on the Special and only, just this week, have it road worthy so it may be too soon for me to judge ... but .... don't know about the orginal pullback bars on there .... too much in the wheelbarrow position maybe ....I don't feel like I have quite as much control. I'm gonna' try to get used to 'em for a while. One of the Special's good points is, for me, the narrower seat up front lets my feet touch better.

I have tried a Standard tank on my Special too but I did not like the edges of the tank sticking out from the seat either. It may be that a seat from an 80G might be the ticket to span the extra width of the Std tank where it meets the seat. Might help the earlier poster keep his junk in place ...
