  • beanie and t-shirt

I've read lots (and posted) about not wearing the proper gear and thought I'd mention this.

A buddy of mine has just taken his course and bike test and was borrowing my helmet, jacket and gloves.
He's now umming and aahing over what to buy and has his eye on an '04 gsxr100 with 4,000km (don't want to get in to the other subject that'll no doubt arise from this ie: what's a good first bike ), so I said come home at lunch and take mine out it's far heavier than what you're thinking of. We did that and then decided to ride back in to work two up - well as I said he has my proper gear and all I had was my spare helmet, a beanie and a jean jacket. I made him wear the beanie and jacket (won't be responsible for a passenger on my bike not protected) so I had a t-shirt, the beanie and a pair of work gloves.
Now here's the thing - it felt great! but before you all start, no I'm not going to do that regularly and yes I'll be getting my gear back right away!

      SiP,
That is why I have a summer jacket. Net type so the air flows through, summer gloves, and summer overpants. Shorts and a "T" shirt feel, protection just in case....

Well seeing as how some states don't even require a helmet I think a beenie is better than nothing. (I use beenie for short trips, and back road driving in summer.) But a full face in winter and on the highway.

I think it depends on how you ride. SLow and easy on country back roads vs carving corners or long highway rides.

But its your head at risk, and were all adults. We can chose to take risks if we so please(until the gov takes more rights)
Like sky diving, bungee jumping, rock climbing and so on. We are able to risk our lives in so many ways. Some require certain regulated safety gear, some don't.

The choice should be ours to make any way.

I'll bet the - no pants - thing got you a lot of attention... but as long as you had shoes... you would at least get service...

The jacket and gloves I was talking about are the net type with armor built in - excellent, but they're the ones my buddy had borrowed.

              "Hmmm....."

Never had a problem with """carving corners or long highway rides.""'

All my "events" happened on """slow and easy country back roads""".

"""The choice should be ours to make any way."""

              Yes, I agree.

My "choice" of a full helmet saved my jaw a few years ago... and my "choice" of a leather jacket in Texas heat recently saved me some shoulder skin. (a medieval suit of armor may have stopped my collar bone from snapping... but those are so hard to find nowadays and quite pricey)

You're free to make your personal choices... as I'm free to later laugh at the outcome of the choices you made.

Ya know, it's an odd thing I've noticed...
The first thing that every customer did after dropping their bike off for a "crash estimate"... was to walk to the parts counter and buy a full-faced helmet to replace the "bennie" they were wearing.
Funny how personal choices change like that.

Great...just great. A kilt on a bike at 60 mph. Now there's an image I really don't need in my head.
