I think it depends on how you ride. SLow and easy on country back roads vs carving corners or long highway rides.

Like sky diving, bungee jumping, rock climbing and so on. We are able to risk our lives in so many ways. Some require certain regulated safety gear, some don't.

The choice should be ours to make any way.

I agree with most of whats said here exception being how you ride...it doesnt matter...if youre going down it really isnt a matter of how you were riding...point here is to be prepared for the worst case scenario while hoping for the best case scenario.Granted certain riding styles might be higher risk,but if you want a lower risk...drive a cage.Risk is inherent in our "sport" and its all abt migitating that risk.I have known of quite a few ppl that were closed minded abt proper safety gear...then they had a debilitating accident...amazing how quickly those ppl changed their tune.Nothing like scaping skin at any speed across the road to make you wish you had the proper gear in the first place...Also it never ceases to amaze me how ppl in defending their dangerous habits...always cite what other ppl do in justifying what THEY are doing.Just because someone else is doing something dangerous...does that mean its ok for you to do that?YMMV
