  • '79 turning 100 (thousand!)

I have been watching the odometer slowly creeping toward 100,000 miles, and it's coming soon! I road for a couple of weeks with a broken cable, so it probably has 100 grand right now. Still runs strong, has good compression and doesn't burn a drop of oil. I've been riding without second gear for months now. But it is still the best bike I have ever owned: and I started riding in 1959!
The speedo is wildly optimistic. I thought that turning 100,000 would be a good time to get a new, (or at least more accurate,) speedometer. If it has some miles on it I can probably run it back with a drill. Any offers or suggestions?

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
    I've been riding since 1959.

I've been riding since 1959 too!

If you count being bundled up in a side car at the age of 2

As far as speedos are concerned, I never wear them. I used to but I grew tired of the wildlife protection agency accusing me of smuggling Budgies

Seriuosly though, I have one here you could have for free if you lived on the other side of the world, however, failing that, there are usually two or three up for grabs on ebay and let's not forget our friend Andreas..

No gears in the speedo it's a flying magnet so if you try to turn one back or forward it takes several days straight to turn any miles off them.
You might be farther ahead to take it apart and move the odo by hand.

          XS speedometer? recognize?

          Hi Ed,
          on my 80XS1100SG eleven special
I have installed a cable & housing from a yamaha tripple (750 or 850) The ends are the same, and though it is a few inches shorter, it still reaches & works with XS1100 speedometer.

I bought a 140 mph speedometer off ebay "for an XS1100". It fits perfecftly and is very accurate. Less than 1 second deviation per minute over a measured mile indicating 60mph. Odometer is accurate to plus or minus 15 miles per thousand. Fromt tire is Metzler ME 880 marathon 100/90-19. psi 40-42.

Since yamaha did not make a 140 speedo for an 1100, it is no surprise that it does not quite match. Rubber seal around face is blue, not XS11 black. Still, after several years without functional speedometer, & using tach to guage speed, I am happy with it.

This speedo may have been for a 650 special. Maybe something else. Who knows?
          Anybode recognize this speedometer?

Nice selection at mikesxs. They all say 650 but they'll work. Any jap bike speedo will work.

man if you're going to invest in a new speedo, go with a NEW one. Digital readout, backlit with LED (conserves juice), cool color schemes, perhaps a built-in tach?

Nothing measures a milestone like 100k on all original parts like a brandy new shiny speedo, man.

Forgot to say...my 79 Standard has just over 50,000 on it now. Running strong although it could use some help...Keep ridin man.

Man, I'll never get there. My original had 17k on the clock but I hated the 85 mph face so I got another it was a 140 mph with18k on the clock off of a 750, but I hated the green faceplate not matching my black tach. Then I got an 11 160 mph speedo with 22k on the clock and ran that for a while. But, THEN I got my paw on a set with 7k on them! So, I sold my old one to another member. The ridiculous part is that the tach with only 7k on it is bouncy! How the hell is that possible? I think maybe the tach were not made well. It is the second nice looking tach that has been bouncy.

I tried to include this with my first post, but my dinosaur of a computer (Windows '98,) wouldn't cooperate. I'll post another at 99,999.9

Mine just turned 80,000 kms on this last trip. So did Kathi's 1000 Virago. They were only a hundred or so kms different. Both pretty good old bikes.

                              Hey Ken,

How'd you do that? Is that fair dinkum or did you manually wind the clock?
