True, but our 4 bangers are all nearly thirty years old and still have class. Not to mention that without a bunch of turbos and lights flashing underneath the body and an exhaust tip the size of a bucket, we can still rip a new one in nearly 90% of the vehicles on the roads.

What do you mean nearly? I am waiting to see one that dosen't disappear into my mirrors so quick it looks like he is in high speed backup.

Mine is too loud. I would LOVE to get a set of stock mufflers.

Mine is not loud by choice, but necessity, there is a big difference between being rude on purpose and having no choice.

          I went another route...
'64 El Camino with the 350 hp 327 and a close ratio Muncie 4-speed. Dual exhausts running Turbo Corvair mufflers, look like golf bags. Car was very quiet, but didn't hit 4th till over 100mph. Would hold its own with stock Corvetts and other muscle cars of the day. What a hoot...never got the nod from the Boys in Blue and shocked the hell out of drivers of loud, noisy cars. No one believed a vehicle that quiet could be that fast.

Issue was price.. each muffler was something like $150.00. My brother ended up with the car when I got married and had to get something more respectable. He later sold it when he got married. I wouldn't be surprised if it istill running around somewhere in central Wisconsin.

Another fun car was my turbo Audi, particularly after I shimmed the spring to give it a few pounds more boost. Not good off the line, as is the case with most turbos, but get it revved up and it could fly. Loved to hear that turbo whine going up and down as I took the corners. Also a very quiet car that surprised a few people.

My first fast car was a 64 El Camino, it had a .030 over 283 and a close ratio Muncie 4-speed. 350 HP to the rear wheel with an 8000 RPM red line and very fast. Those were good times indeed.

I love that it took the bottom of page two for someone to point this out. For the record, I have a one of those souped subarus, (with a stock muffler, though.) My XS is breathing out of a completely shot 4-1 supertrapp - sounds like a straight pipe.

Why is it, though, that an inline four on a motorcycle is a soul-inspiring frantic crescendo of goodness, while the 4-bangers in the cars sound like a steamroller popping bloated dead toads? And worse when unmuffled.

                Probably

And no offense to you, most of these "Loud Muffler car's with no engine mods are a bunch of Jack asses, weaving in and out of traffic thinking or wishing they are driving a high performance machine."...Plus I would like to think that a person riding a scooter has more class and a lot more character than a person riding a cage.

You can get some sportster or soft tail stockers. Run a single punched out, or double unpunched. Low tone at low rpms and sounds great high rpms too.

I had that "mines too loud" thing going when I first got it too.

Because the motorcycle engines are very high performance by comparison. Also the bike is not trying to drag around a ton or more while sounding cool.

Actually most the little 4 bangers sound better than the v-8 pickup trucks with the crappy exhaust systems, for the same reason. Most of them are outting out about 1/2hp/cu in, which is terrible.

Let me see 79 1100 at 95 horse = 86 horse per litre

                        My 08 f150 with 5.4 litre at 300 hp = 55 horses per litre.

                        My '72 datsun 1200 had 61 horse for a 1.2 litre motor = 51 hp per litre

It's kinda disgraceful that my truck, with all of the computerized controls and 3 valves per cylinder, fuel injected, bla, bla, bla, does not produce much more horsepower per litre then my old na 1200 did back in '72. (I know, I know there is a subtle difference in torque between the two) Still, it illustrates the difference between Jap technology were the four bangers were made efficient to create power whereas the North Americans boosted cubes.

By the way the old datsun had a double roller, steel geared, timing chain compared to the single, plastic geared one in my short block 350 of same vintage.

My car gets about 238 hp out of 2000cc's. That's 119hp/l. However, with the fuel injection, electronics, turbocharger and intercooler... you would expect such. That's better than the XS, but the performance is uninspiring compared to most any motorcycle. If I run a 3100-lb car, gassed up with me in it, that's 14.1 lbs / hp (peak.)

The XS is much less peaky, and all fueled up with me on it, maybe ... let's be generous and say 800lbs at most. That's 8.4 lbs per HP. It's hard to touch that performance for less than $100k in a stock car. Not to mention, I'm getting between 38 and 41 mpg. And if you want to nitpick, you can say the specific fuel efficiency (mass moved * distance / fuel volume) of a car is much better. And a tractor trailor is better than that. And a train is better than that. And a ship is better than that. A human running might get in the low 300 miles/gal range, though, if you figure the calories in a gallon of Wesson. (and if we could do it so easily.) A efficient and well-trained man on a bike might get close to 1000mpg?
