Being an XJ owner, I'm glad the PO was kind enough to have my "stock XJ seat that was forged in the furnaces of Hades" completely redone.

Looks great, and is nice & comfy... yet still looks close to stock.

Couldn't beat the price, either... since it came included w/ the rest of the bike!

If there's ever a Mod that's needed on an XJ... the seat's the one!

xsentric, I like your seat. Phil has a nice one on his '79F also.

                    More lights

Probably more amps for the lights than the alternator can handle. His nighttime riding will be limited to just a few short miles, then the battery will be dead.

Hey Planedick. You're pretty quick to jump to conclusions, eh?
I don't have a problem at all with the battery. Night runs through the mountains are a particular favourite pastime of mine. The air is cool and the bike runs sweet and you get plenty of warning of oncoming traffic by the glare from their headlights. Haven't had a problem with them in the last 7 years or 180,000 klms.
I just used a bit of commonsense when choosing the bulbs for the lights.
The 8" headlight has a 50 watt HID insert in it (8000k) and the 6" spotlights have 55 watt Zenon bulbs in them, so they're not that hard on the electrics. Mind you, I don't sit idling at the traffic lights with all lights ablaze either. I just flick em on once the revs are up a bit.
They're essential for riding over here as the wildlife has no respect for fences at all (they just hop straight over them) plus the bluish tinge to the bulbs doesn't seem to startle the roos like a white light does.
Just got the original front end back on the old girl tonight so I'll be able to got out and play a bit more comfortably later this week.

                        The rest

The rest of the lights on the bike eat up 11.25 amps and your head lights are 13.3 amps which is 24.5 amps which includes brake lights and turn signals so when you use the turn signals or brake lights you are using 2.5 amps more than the alternator puts out. Of course if you have put LED's in some of those areas the draw is considerably less. I'm not jumping to conclusions, just pointing out reality.

Trying to work out how 2 x 4 watt instrument bulbs (3 on high beam) and 2 x 15 watt tail light globes add up to 11.25 amps?? Reality is the fact that indicators are rarely used while the spots are switched on, and the brake lights are a momentary usage item also while on the move. I do not use the spots in built up areas and turn them off when oncoming traffic is encountered. The horns I have on the bike use 90 watts when activated but I don't count them in the equation at all. I realise the TCI unit needs its 12.3 volts or whatever to run, but the amperage drawn there is negligible
Bottom line is that sensible, legal use of the lights has not affected the battery charge discernably and most night runs are 100 -150 k's long (for coffee), and has never resulted in a dead battery, as you stated I would end up with after a short run.

Ok, something is not making sense here. Now I know that the ignition system draws some current as well, maybe an amp or two, and I just added up with his system assuming instead of the 60 watt HID he has, the 85 watt headlight that I run, and figuring in the front markers that a special doesn't have, plus the driving lights, and it comes to 263 watts used by the lighting system. This calculates out to 18 amps, and if you add the 2 amps for the ignition, and another 2.5 for brake lights while on the brakes, or that momentary 2.5 amps as signals flash, that would come out to about 25 amps if the turn signals were on without flashing, the brakes on and basically everyting all at max draw at the same time.

It doesn't sound like this setup is the recipe for disaster some are saying it is, unless everything is kept on at idle. Now factor in LED brake lights, and the HID and the picture is better. These things don't charge too bad as long as the RPM's stay above 2500, and yes there is not very much reserve capacity, in many cases not enough to run heated gear frankly, but the setup he is running should be fine, although it will be pushing the charging system harder than 80% in fully stock form, but I think he is below 80% as he is running it, there just isn't enough left to safely add anything significant without exceeding the 80% safety margin (most electrical circuits are designed to run no more than 80% of max capacity continuously.)

You got me there, Jetmechmarty, though it normally doesn't figure in the moonlight mountain hops. It's used mainly for overnighters and camping trips where , in most instances, we travel to our destination during the day, then party all night. It is all led lit though, and I've covered around 20,000 klms with it on with no problems so far.
